SAIC and Alibaba get ready to launch their full-size NEV crossover in China under the IM LS9 name. It will rival the Li Auto L9 and other models. The new car will enter the domestic market this year as SAIC aims to boost its subsidiary sales volume.
IM Motors is a joint venture between SAIC and Alibaba. It was launched in 2020 as a high-end brand. The brand’s current model line comprises four electric cars: the L6 and L7 sedans, and the LS6 and LS7 crossovers. However, this brand suffers from slow sales in the highly competitive domestic market. IM Motors sold 19,174 units from January to May 2025, according to China EV DataTracker.

SAIC & Alibaba aim to enhance the sales volume of their high-end brand. Therefore, the two parties recently applied for a sales license of the updated IM LS6 crossover with an optional EREV powertrain. This year, IM Motors will also launch its flagship model, which is the LS9 crossover.
IM LS9 spy shots
On June 30, spy shots of the IM LS9 crossover leaked online. We can distinguish this vehicle by its steering wheel alone. It aligns with other IM-branded models, offering an oval shape and two spokes. The car’s interior also has two wireless phone charging pads, a couple of cup holders, and a spacious compartment. A large monitor sits in the car’s center console.

The IM LS9 is covered with camouflage. Its headlights are finalized due to the early test stage. However, the overall design of the LS9’s front end aligns with the previously disclosed new LS6 SUV. It has a closed front end with a small air intake in the lower part of the front bumper. The car will also have Y-shaped headlights joined by an LED strip.

The LS9 has a slightly slanted roofline, a LiDAR sensor, retractable door handles, and five-spoke rims. We can also highlight the long distance between this crossover’s B and C pillars. It means the second-row passengers of this car will get some extra legroom. The IM LS9 is a three-row SUV. However, its seat layout has yet to be disclosed.
IM LS9 powertrain
The LS9 most likely shares the platform with other IM-branded models. It is the iO Origin architecture suitable for BEV and EREV vehicles. There is no information about the specs or powertrain details of the LS9. However, this model will likely adopt both BEV and EREV modifications.
The BEV version of the IM LS9 will likely adopt a dual-motor 4WD with a combined peak power output of 500 kW (670 hp). The same drivetrain powers the new LS6 revealed by the Chinese Ministry. As for the EREV variant, it could have a 1.5-liter turbocharged generator for 114 kW (153 hp) and an electric motor for 230 kW (308 hp). This powertrain will be adopted by the mentioned LS6.
