Buick unveiled the new Electra L7 sedan for the Chinese market. It is over 5 meters long and features all-wheel drive (AWD) with a 374 kW motor and lidar for the Momenta-powered assisted driving system.

Electra is a new China-only brand under Buick, which launched in April. It has a similar positioning to the Galaxy sub-brand’s relationship with Geely. Buick plans to launch six EVs under the Electra brand over the next 12 months, the company announced during its April launch, revealing the concepts of three of them.

As Buick has already applied for the sales license of the Electra L7 in China, we learned some core specs from the regulator under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The Electra L7 is a large 5-seater sedan built on Buick’s Xiao Yao EV platform. It has dimensions of 5032 mm in length, 1952 mm in width, and 1500 mm in height, featuring a relatively long wheelbase of 3000 mm. The curb weight is 2,105 kg.

L7 has an EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) powertrain, which includes an ICE (internal combustion engine) in addition to the e-motors. However, the ICE is not connected to the wheel and only powers the battery or helps the electric motors. The whole drivetrain is produced by SAIC.

It is AWD, featuring a 122 kW e-motor on the front axle and an additional 252 kW motor in the rear, providing a combined power of 374 kW (502 hp). The 1.5L ICE engine has 115 kW of power.

The electricity is stored in a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack, with cells from Zenergy and manufactured by SAIC Power. The capacity wasn’t disclosed yet.

Buick also revealed that the cockpit will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8775 chip with 72 TOPS and claims it is the first joint venture sedan to feature lidar. L7 will feature an ADAS from Momenta.

The new EREV will be manufactured by the SAIC-GM joint venture in Wuhan. Like most of the GM EVs in China, Electra is designed and engineered by Patac (Pan Asia Technical Automotive Centre), another SAIC-GM JV.

L7 will also have a BEV version; its specs have not yet been disclosed.

Buick Electra L7 is a China-only car developed exclusively for China, under Buick’s new policy, which resembles Volkswagen’s “In China, for China”. The car is expected to start deliveries in Q4 in China.

Buick China claims it is a 300,000 yuan-class car built on a 1million-class Xiao Yao platform, which CarNewsChina would translate into English as the car will launch at about 250,000 yuan (34,800 USD).
