Great Wall Motor (GWM) chairman Wei Jianjun shared a photo of the company’s first supercar in China. It will adopt a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a self-developed 4-liter V8 under the hood. This model will enter the domestic market as the Yangwang U9 rival with a price tag above 1 million yuan (140K USD).
Great Wall Motor has been reportedly working on its supercar since 2021. On January 1, 2025, GWM executives attended the general meeting and kicked off the independent development of the new luxury brand with a codename “BG”. In the same month, the GWM’s new trademark “自信汽车” (Zixin Qiche, Confidence Auto) was published by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).
In April 2025, Great Wall Motor CTO Wu Huixiao confirmed that the company has been working on a supercar for five consecutive years. She highlighted that GWM spent a lot of time on cost control. On July 23, GWM chairman Wei Jianjun shared the first teaser photo of the company’s first supercar.

Wei Jianjun shared in his official Weibo social media account that this photo was taken on the 35th anniversary of Great Wall Motor. In this photo, we can see the chairman himself (in a white shirt) and the company’s executives. We will remind you that GWM was initially founded in China in 1984. However, Wei Jianjun prefers to consider 1990 – the year when he became the GWM’s director – as the company’s birthday.
Moving to the Great Wall Motor’s first supercar, it is covered with black film. However, we can see that it is a relatively large vehicle with a long body. It has a sloped bonnet line, a low beltline, and wide fenders. Large air vents could be seen in front of the rear fenders. It hints that the GWM’s first supercar will have a rear-mounted engine.

Previously, GWM shared that its supercar will adopt the company’s self-developed 4-liter V8 engine. Great Wall Motor officially released this ICE at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show in April. It will become a part of the plug-in hybrid powertrain. There is no further information about its specs.
It seems that the Yangwang U9 electric sports car from BYD will become the core rival of the GWM model. It has four e-motors for 1,287 hp and 1,680 Nm. The Yangwang U9’s cumulative sales reached 160 units from September 2024 to June 2025, according to China EV DataTracker. Its starting price is 1,680,000 yuan (234,150 USD).
