The Denza Z9 electric two-door coupe from BYD was spotted in China as a soft-top convertible. This vehicle will enter the domestic market soon to rival the MG Cyberster and other overseas four-seat sports cars.

The Denza Z sports car was first unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025 in China as an electric concept car. Designed by Audi veteran Wolfgang Egger, the concept car had sculpted rear fenders, a large air intake in the front, a blackened roof, and a large rear spoiler. In early June, the pre-production variant of the Denza Z was seen in China during road tests. On July 29, a photo of the Denza Z soft top leaked online.

The pre-production Denza Z cabriolet follows the design language of the concept car. It adopts a sloped front end with distinguishing headlights and a large air intake. The car has a bigger air vent in the bonnet. Its other features include hidden door handles, door-mounted side-view mirrors, and a charging port cover in the right rear fender.

Interestingly, the previously revealed Denza Z concept had a charging port cover on both left and right fenders. Modern BYD cars support the function called two-gun charging. It allows the BEV to charge from two connectors simultaneously.

Back to the spotted Denza Z, its core feature is the soft top. This variant of the upcoming electric coupe looks less aerodynamically efficient than the concept car. Moreover, this body shape typically reduces the torsional rigidity of the car’s body. However, the soft top variant will broaden the group of the Denza Z’s potential customers, posing a threat to the MG Cyberster from SAIC.

It is worth mentioning that the regular Denza Z was recently seen in China at the charging pile. This model had multi-spoke sporty wheels. Otherwise, its appearance was in line with the concept car.

More about Denza Z

Core specs of the Denza Z have yet to be revealed. However, BYD officials disclosed that this coupe will be equipped with the Disus-M suspension system. It is derived from the Disus-Z chassis used by the Yangwang U7 sedan. It is an electronic vertical body control system that uses data from sensors to detect road conditions and adapt the suspension. The time of response is 10 milliseconds.

Another feature of the Denza Z is a foldable steering wheel. It creates extra space for the driver in case of a collision. CarNewsChina expects the Denza Z to adopt the 580 kW (778 hp) electric motor that powers the BYD Han L and the BYD Tang L. However, this information has not been proven.
