Battery maker CATL held a press conference on the eve of IAA Mobility in Munich, launching the new Shenxing Pro battery and its “In Europe, for Europe” strategy.

Shenxing Pro is an LFP battery, available in two configurations: Shenxing Pro Super Long Life & Long Range Battery (yes, this is the official name) and Shenxing Pro Super-Fast Charging Battery, company revealed at a press event attended by CarNewsChina.

The Long Range version can deliver 758 km WLTP range with a lifespan of 12 years or 1,000,000 km, according to CATL. The battery has only 9% degradation after the first 200,000 km, which car leasing companies will appreciate, CATL continues, hinting at where their European strategy is aimed.

The Super-Fast Charging version can add 478 km WLTP range in 10 minutes, equivalent to 0.8km per second. It can deliver 830 kW even at 20% state of charge (SoC), and it comes with a warranty of 10 years or 240,000 km, CATL says.

Both variants use the NP 3.0 system, which is designed to avoid battery fire in case of thermal runaway between cells. NP 3.0, which stands for No Propagation, 3.0, enables the battery to sustain a high-voltage supply for over an hour after thermal runaway, allowing the vehicle to maintain its speed and the driver to navigate to safety without smoke or fire.

Shenxing Pro is made of Wave cells, which, unlike traditional battery cells, have a raised shoulder design and space-sharing technology. This design allows the cooling systems and fixation to be applied from any direction, enabling a 25% boost in battery pack stiffness and, despite Cell-to-Body (CTB) limitations, achieving 76% pack volume efficiency, according to specifications shared by CATL.

“With uncompromised range, charging, and durability, Shenxing Pro is the ultimate solution for electric mobility in Europe,” said Dr. Lingbo Zhu, CTO of CATL’s International Business Unit.

NP 3.0, which stands for No Propagation, 3.0, increases safety in case of thermal runaway.

CATL currently operates two plants in Europe, with a third on the way. The first was opened in 2018 in Erfurt, Germany. The second was opened in 2022 in Debrecen, Hungary. The third plant was announced in 2024 as a 4.1 billion EUR joint venture with Stellantis in Spain, where LFP batteries will be produced. Stellantis is also building a plant for Leapmotor in Spain.

With “In Europe, for Europe”, CATL is echoing Volkswagen’s “In China for China” strategy, which is aimed at localising EVs to suit the needs of Chinese customers.

CATL is the world’s largest battery maker and by far the largest EV battery maker in China, with 151.71 GWh installed EV battery capacity in 2025 (January – July), having 43.5% market share in China, ahead of second BYD, which has 23.6% share.

The battery giant now eyes Europe to localise its batteries for the needs of European automakers, of which many are already customers, including BMW, Stellantis, and Volkswagen.
