GWM restructures direct sales: Tank withdraws, “Wey New Energy Direct” established in China
Great Wall Motor (GWM) has restructured its direct sales network in China, according to a report by National Business Daily. The Tank brand has withdrawn from the company’s direct retail system, while “GWM Smart Select” has been renamed “Wey New Energy Direct.” Current showrooms under the new brand name now display and sell only vehicles from the Wey lineup, including the Blue Mountain, Gaoshan series, and Mocha Hi4.
In Beijing, most former “GWM Smart Select” stores now operate exclusively as Wey outlets. Tank 700 models have been removed from display and sales at these locations, although after-sales maintenance for Tank vehicles can still be handled there. Staff confirmed that future showroom operations will centre solely on Wey brand vehicles.
The Tank brand’s withdrawal from the direct network does not affect its availability through dealerships. In the dealer channel, Wey and Tank models continue to be sold under a shared retail framework. Tank 700 and other Tank models, including the 300 and 400, remain available through authorised Tank dealerships across China.
GWM Smart Select was initially launched on April 24, 2024, as Great Wall Motor’s direct retail brand. Its stores initially offered both Wey and Tank models before the recent restructuring. The rebranded “Wey New Energy Direct” network now focuses on strengthening Wey’s retail presence, using formats such as retail centres, delivery hubs, and exhibition spaces.
As of October 2025, Wey’s direct network covers 110 cities across China, with 430 stores in operation. Great Wall plans to expand the number of outlets to over 600 by the end of the year, reaching about 200 cities.
In September 2025, Great Wall Motor reported total vehicle sales of 133,639 units, up 23.29% year-on-year. New energy vehicle sales reached 45,961 units, and overseas sales were 50,269 units. Wey’s monthly sales stood at 11,026 units, up 63.23% from a year earlier, while Tank achieved 21,441 units, a 14.41% increase.
At present, Wey and Tank remain connected through shared dealership operations, but only Wey continues to expand its presence within Great Wall’s direct sales system.
