China’s bestselling EV from Geely Automobile caught fire in China in late October. It is the Geely Xingyuan hatchback with a starting price of 68,800 yuan (9,690 USD). It sold 343,351 units from January to September 2025. This year, the Xingyuan will enter overseas markets under the Geely EX2 name.
According to Hongxing News, the Geely Xingyuan caught fire in an industrial park in Suzhou, Jiangsu, on October 23. The report indicated that the car suddenly ignited. Witnesses heard several firework-like explosions. Shortly after, flames rapidly covered the car. We will highlight an eerie coincidence. The Geely Xingyuan caught fire on the same day the Li Auto Mega minivan burned down in Shanghai.
Fortunately, the fire and several explosions injured no people. Interestingly, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. In a short video, we can see the flames mostly in the upper part of the car’s body. It is possible that the Xingyuan caught fire not due to a faulty battery. This hatchback adopts the Aegis (ShenDun) Short Blade LFP battery that was previously known for its safety.
Chinese car blogger Dianche Xiaopi assumed this accident was caused by a cabin fire. He highlighted that static electricity inside cars is becoming a serious problem. BEV users should check if there are flammable items left in the car before leaving. Anyway, there was no official comment at press time.
