The BYD’s Denza B5 body-on-frame plug-in hybrid SUV scored five stars in the ANCAP crash and safety evaluation test. It demonstrated good performance across most scenarios. The B5 sells in China under the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 name.
The Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 was launched in China in 2023 as an off-road SUV built on BYD’s DMO platform. It boasts dimensions of 4890/1970/1920 mm with a wheelbase of 2800 mm. The ground clearance could be increased to 310 mm, thanks to the hydraulic suspension system. Its powertrain comprises a 1.5-liter engine and two e-motors for 505 kW (650 hp).
Outside China, the Bao 5 sells under the Denza B5 name. Australia is the core market for this model. Recently, the B5 was evaluated by the Australian NCAP.
Denza B5 ANCAP results
The Denza B5 plug-in hybrid SUV earned five stars in the ANCAP crash test. It scored highest in the Child Occupant Protection segment, showing good protection in frontal offset and side impact collisions. However, ANCAP experts highlighted that one of the selected booster seats could not be correctly installed in the centre rear seating position.
The Adult Occupant Protection category got 86%. The passenger compartment of the Denza B5 remained stable during collisions. But the front structure of the car presented a risk to occupants of an oncoming vehicle in the frontal offset collision. Therefore, the B5 got a penalty.

The Vulnerable Road User Protection segment scored 74%. The Denza B5’s performance was good in almost all AEB scenarios, except AEB Backover, which was marginal. Moreover, the windscreen pillars, the windscreen base, and front edge of the bonnet surface performed marginal, weak, and poor for the head of a struck pedestrian. At last, the BYD Denza B5 got 78% is the Safety Assist category.
Australia will become the very first market to launch the B5 off-road SUV under Denza. This brand will target legacy premium brands after the market entry in 2026.
