The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X full-size EREV crossover revealed specs in China as it applied for a sales license. It boasts a 5.2-meter body and a 65.2 kWh ternary NMC battery for up to 340 km of range. It is available with RWD and AWD powertrain options.

The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X was first revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025 as a full-size SUV from Volkswagen and SAIC. It was reported to have three rows of seats and a mixed range of over 1,000 km. This family driver is clearly aimed at the current segment leader, the Aito M8 from Huawei and Seres. On January 8, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) exposed core specs of the ID. Era 9X.

Volkswagen ID. Era 9X exterior and dimensions

The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X aligns with the concept car revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show in terms of exterior styling. It has thin LED running lights sitting under the bonnet. A front bumper integrates sizable blocks of headlights. The 9X has no conventional radiator grille. An active radiator intake is here to keep the engine cool.

The ID. Era 9X adopts a LiDAR sensor on the roof and multi-spoke chrome-plated rims, hinting at a high-end market positioning. It has conventional side-view mirrors and retractable door handles. It is worth noting that hidden door handles are going to be prohibited in China in 2027. So, Volkswagen will soon have to come up with an updated variant of this car.

From the back, the VW ID. Era 9X has an LED taillight strip, a roof spoiler, and a minimalistic bumper. The car has a slightly slanted roofline. It is worth noting that VW officials prefer to call this vehicle “SUV”. However, it doesn’t seem to have any eminent off-road capabilities. It also has a regular monocoque body. Therefore, we prefer to call it ca rossover.

The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X is slightly longer than the BMW X7

The ID. Era 9X is a full-size car with dimensions of 5207/1997/1810 mm. The wheelbase reaches 3,070 mm. For clarity, it is 27 mm longer, 3 mm narrower, and 25 mm lower than the BMW X7. It rides on 20-inch or 21-inch wheels. The front and rear overhangs of the 9X are 981 mm and 1,156 mm, respectively. Its approach & departure angles are 18 and 17 degrees. The new crossover applied for a sales license with six seats inside.

Powertrain and weight

The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X has three powertrain variants. They come with the 1.5-liter turbocharged ERV engine manufactured by SAIC Volkswagen. Its peak power is 105 kW (141 hp). The 9X is an extended range electric vehicle (EREV). It means this engine sends power to a battery and electric motors with no direct connection to the wheels.

The entry-level Volkswagen ID. Era 9X has a single electric motor in the rear axle for 220 kW (295 hp) on board. Its zero-to-hundred acceleration time has yet to be revealed. However, the top speed of this large car reaches 200 km/h.

An LFP battery made by the joint venture between CATL and SAIC for 51.1 kWh powers the ID. Era 9X. It has a weight of 390 kg and provides up to 267 km of electric range. This crossover has a curb weight of 2,600 kg. Its fuel consumption with a drained battery is 5.95 liters per 100 km.

The second variant of the ID. Era 9X has the same electric motor and the same top speed. However, it is equipped with a CATL-SAIC-made ternary NMC battery for 65.2 kWh. It weighs 387 kg and provides 340 km of range without turning on the petrol engine. This version of the VW-branded SUV has a curb weight of 2,620 kg. Its fuel consumption is also 5.95 liters per 100 km.

The top-trim level ID. Era 9X has a 65.2 kWh battery and an additional electric motor in the rear axle for 160 kW (215 hp). The total output of this crossover reaches 380 kW (510 hp). This variant has a curb weight of 2,700 kg. Its electric range is 321 km. The fuel consumption is 6.27 L/100km. The ID. Era 9X is expected to enter the Chinese market in 2026 with a potential debut at the Beijing Auto Show 2026.
