The MG brand has officially announced that the first pure-electric SUV in the MG4 family will be called the MG 4X. According to Y-Auto, the “X” nomenclature is marketed by SAIC as representing “infinite possibilities” for young buyers. The vehicle represents a mechanical pivot for the brand, transitioning the MG4 formula into a crossover format to compete in the high-volume SUV segment.

Exterior Design and Visual Identity

The MG 4X continues the MG4 family design language while introducing specific SUV elements. The front fascia features the brand’s signature illuminated logo paired with a new through-type light bar to enhance visual recognition. The front bumper adopts a dynamic shape to reinforce the brand’s sporting attributes.

From the side, a sharp waistline runs the length of the body, and the vehicle maintains a notable ground clearance consistent with its SUV positioning. The rear is expected to feature through-type taillights with a design similar to the existing MG4 hatchback.

Smart Cockpit and Autonomous Driving

While the full interior has not yet been disclosed, MG confirmed that the 4X will feature a smart cockpit co-developed with Oppo. This “Hand-Car Interconnection” system enables seamless, lag-free interaction between the user’s smartphone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.

For driver assistance, the MG 4X utilises hardware developed in partnership with Horizon Robotics. The vehicle is equipped with high-speed Navigate on Pilot (NOA) and automated parking functions, which the brand claims offer the best experience in its price segment.

Powertrain and Battery Technology

Following the launch of the MG4 Anxin Edition with liquid-solid-state batteries, the MG 4X adopts this tech from the base model up. The 510 km (CLTC) range pack is a manganese-based system with only 5% liquid electrolyte content, significantly improving thermal stability and cold-weather performance.

Market Positioning

The MG 4X is positioned to bridge the gap between performance hatchbacks and functional SUVs. By integrating premium features such as liquid-solid-state batteries and high-speed NOA into a “youth-oriented” crossover, MG is aiming to increase volume in the competitive pure-electric SUV market. This follows the brand’s recent focus on liquid-solid-state technology and its expanding partnership with tech firm Oppo.
