Spy images of the BYD Sealion 08, the brand’s upcoming Ocean series flagship SUV, have surfaced ahead of its official debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The model will sit alongside the Seal 08 sedan as BYD’s new upper-tier Ocean lineup entry, with launch timing aligned for late April.
The leaked vehicle confirms a large three-row SUV footprint, with length exceeding 5,000 mm, width close to 2,000 mm, and a wheelbase beyond 3,000 mm. These dimensions position it directly against full-size electrified SUVs in China’s rapidly expanding premium segment.
Flagship positioning and Ocean design language
The Sealion 08 adopts BYD’s latest Ocean design language, including a clean front fascia, slim lighting signatures, and roof-mounted LiDAR. Early images suggest a more upright SUV stance compared with the Seal 07, indicating a focus on interior space and long-distance usability rather than coupe styling.
Powertrain strategy expands BEV and PHEV overlap
According to earlier filings and Autohome reporting, the Sealion 08 will be offered in both BEV and plug-in hybrid variants. The BEV version is expected to use an 800V architecture paired with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery. Dual-motor versions may exceed 480 kW, with acceleration targets under five seconds to 100 km/h.
Some reports suggest a driving range of up to 1,000 km for high-capacity configurations, although this figure is not officially confirmed and is likely to depend on test conditions and battery pack size.
Chassis technology and smart features
The SUV is expected to feature DiSus-A air suspension, LiDAR-based driver-assistance hardware, and possibly rear-wheel steering. These features indicate BYD is positioning the Sealion 08 closer to the premium smart SUV segment rather than volume mainstream models.

Market context: crowded but growing SUV segment
China’s SUV market remains highly competitive. In March 2026, the Tesla Model Y led with 39,827 units, followed by the Li Auto i6 at 24,198 units and BYD’s Yuan UP (Atto 2) at 21,538 units. Traditional ICE models such as the Toyota RAV4 and Volkswagen Tiguan L still maintained positions in the top 10, highlighting the mixed powertrain landscape BYD is entering at the higher end.
Product lineup expansion
The Sealion 08 is part of BYD’s broader Ocean strategy, which now spans from compact EVs to large flagship SUVs and sedans. Alongside the Ocean-V concept and Seal 08 sedan, the SUV completes a clearer hierarchy for the brand’s premium positioning.
Event context
The Sealion 08 will debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, which is set to become the world’s largest automotive exhibition with 1,451 vehicles displayed across 380,000 square meters of exhibition space, spanning dual venues in Beijing and running from April 24 to May 3.
