SAIC will resurrect the good old Shanghai brand-name. SAIC stands for Shanghai Auto Industry Corporation, SIAC started life as ‘Shanghai Automobile’ building Shanghai-branded cars from 1958 until 1991. The cars were not very good and when the foreign brands started to arrive in the 1980’s nobody wanted a Shanghai anymore.

SAIC hopes that this will be different today. What kind of cars the new-old brand will sell is not clear. The Roewe brand will continue as it is so SAIC could go for a series of cheap cars or for something very expensive to compete with FAW’s Hongqi-brand. They also might use the Shanghai-brand badges for top-spec Roewe’s, a bit like ‘DS’ on some expensive Citroens.

Shanghai-logo consist of characters 上海, Shanghai.
