Reports from China mention that bookings for the Hongqi H5 PHEV have opened. The new model is scheduled to go on sale next month. It will be Hongqi’s first model to be developed on the HMP modular platform.

Compared to its regular petrol-powered sibling, the H5 PHEV gets a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 150 hp. The new model can do a CLTC-rated electric range of 170 km, while the combined range is a whopping 1,600 km. It also supports 60 kW DC fast charging.

New powertrain, same H5 design

Although the upcoming Hongqi H5 PHEV will get the new HMP platform, it carries over the same design language as its petrol-powered sibling. As such, the H5 PHEV gets the signature Hongqi front fascia, which features a massive grille with vertical slats flanked by a pair of slim LED headlights. A slim lower air intake completes the front end of the H5 PHEV.

The H5 PHEV’s rear end gets a one-piece tail light design that splits at each end, with the Hongqi emblem sitting atop. A pair of faux muffler trim pieces with chrome finishing at each bottom corner of the rear bumper give the H5 PHEV a distinctive look.

When viewed from the side, the Hongqi H5 PHEV features a traditional three-box sedan layout, with several tastefully placed chrome trim pieces breaking the monotony of the side profile.

Aimed right at rivals like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry

The H5 PHEV measures 4988/1875/1500 mm, and the wheelbase is 2920 mm long. These dimensions put the H5 PHEV squarely as a Honda Accord / Toyota Camry rival.

Hongqi has yet to release indicative prices for the upcoming H5 PHEV. We expect the company to release estimated prices closer to the model’s launch next month.
