Spy shots have recently emerged of the PHEV version of the Hongqi H5 undergoing testing. The second generation Hongqi H5, which in the Middle East is known as the Hongqi Ousado, launched in 2022 and is a mid-large sized executive sedan.

The current Hongqi H5 is known internally at FAW as the C100 and it’s known that on November 22, 2023 the first Hongqi C100 PHEV rolled off the assembly line at the company’s trial production department.

Spy shots show that the PHEV version looks largely the same as the existing H5. It has the same large grille with waterfall chrome decoration and narrow LED running lights on the top with the headlight clusters further down the fender. At the side we can see that the car has new style wheels which along with looking sporty might help aerodynamics. Twin charging ports are mounted below the C-pillar on the left hand side. Again the rear looks largely the same as the existing model with forked taillights. Trunk space is probably smaller due to the battery pack.

Just to prove this really is the PHEV version there is a card in the back giving vehicle information. We can see from the spy shots that also the interior remains unchanged. The car gets both an LCD instrument screen along with a large screen mounted from the center console to the dashboard at an angle, there is a storage area behind it.

Bar being built around the 1.5T engine and an electric motor we know little else about the PHEV system. Currently the Hongqi H5 is available with either a 1.5T or 2.0T petrol engine with maximum power of 124 and 165 kW respectively, with torque of 258 and 340 Nm accordingly. There is also an HEV version built around the 1.5T engine, the electric motor adding 140 kW power and 280 Nm of torque. It is possible that the PHEV version will use the same motor.

The Hongqi H5 measures in at 4988, 1875, and 1470 mm (l/w/h) and rides on a 2920 mm wheelbase.

Although best known for producing state limousines, in recent years Hongqi have had increasing success with a consumer oriented range designed to compete with the likes of the German premium trio.
