The FAW-Toyota bZ5, an all-electric SUV, is officially set to launch on June 10th, following its recent rollout from the production line in Tianjin. This new model, built on the e-TNGA platform, is poised to enter the market with competitive pricing and a focus on advanced technology and range.

The bZ5 will be offered with two range options: a 550 km CLTC range version, with pre-sale prices expected to be under 130,000 yuan (18,000 USD), and an L2 advanced driving assistance trim also with a 550 km range, priced under 160,000 yuan (22,200 USD). A 630 km CLTC range option is also available.

A key highlight of the bZ5 is its power source: BYD Blade batteries. The vehicle is driven by a 200 kW (268 hp) front electric motor provided by BYD’s subsidiary FinDreams.

In terms of design, the bZ5 sports a distinctive “hammerhead shark” front face and a sleek, fastback profile with hidden door handles. It measures 4780mm in length, 1866mm in width, and 1510mm in height, with a 2880mm wheelbase. LED lights and 21-inch alloy wheels further enhance the exterior.

The interior boasts a minimalist design centred around a 15.6-inch floating central control screen and LCD instruments. Comfort features include a 1.44-square-meter panoramic sunroof, 256-colour ambient lighting, and four “nap modes.” Nine airbags ensure safety.

For advanced driving capabilities, the bZ5 integrates the Momenta 5.0 L2 urban advanced driving assistance system, supported by 33 sensors, offering over 30 assisted driving functions.

Editor’s comment

It’s evident that with the bZ5, Toyota’s electrification strategy has undergone a significant shift. The company is now not only aligning with the Chinese market’s demands for core technologies like electric powertrains, batteries, and intelligent features and catching up with domestic competitors but also engaging in intense price competition.
