Smart #5 EHD plug-in hybrid SUV official images revealed in China
On July 17, Smart announced the addition of a plug-in hybrid variant to its Smart #5 SUV lineup officially called the Smart #5 EHD (Electric Hybrid Drive), with a blue exterior paint, a pure electric range of 250 km, and a comprehensive range of 1,600 km.


Currently, the Smart #5 is only available in BEV variant in five trims with a price range of 239,900 – 368,000 yuan (33,400 – 51,200 USD).
Both RWD and AWD are offered. The RWD is powered by a 250 kW (335 hp)/373 Nm or 267 kW (358 hp)/373 Nm electric motor, paired with 76 kWh lithium iron phosphate or 100 kWh ternary lithium battery, which correspond to a CLTC cruising range of 570 km and 740 km, respectively. The AWD adds a front 165 kW (221 hp)/270 Nm electric motor, combined with 100 kWh ternary lithium battery, providing 670 km and 580 km ranges.


For the Smart #5 EHD, the plug-in hybrid system consists of a 1.5T engine (model BHE15-CFZ) with a maximum power of 120 kW (161 hp). At this time, the official only revealed that the lithium iron phosphate battery pack’s capacity is larger than 40 kWh and the CLTC fuel consumption is as low as 4.4L/100km. The battery is supplied by CATL.


In the exterior, the Smart #5 EHD continues the Boxy design style of that of the BEV variant. A lidar is present on the roof, implying advanced driving assistance capabilities.

The length, width, and height are 4705/1920/1710 mm, and the wheelbase is 2900 mm, which is 5 mm taller than the BEV variant, also making it the biggest model under the brand. The curb weight is 2,190 kg.

In 2024, Smart’s total sales in the Chinese market were 33,427 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 19.37%, fell short from the annual target of 50,000 vehicles.
Based on the latest available sales data in March this year, 1,659 units of the Smart #1 were sold, followed by 568 units of the Smart #3, and 344 units of the Smart #5.
