Tesla China sold 67,886 EVs in July, down 8.4% from the same month last year and down 5.2% from June. In the previous ten months, Tesla China experienced a year-over-year decline in nine of them, with a brief pause in June, when the US automaker slightly rose 0.8% YoY.

Tesla China sales figures include both domestic sales and exports.

In the first seven months of the year (January – July), Tesla China sold 432,360 cars, down 13.7% from the same period last year. Tesla China sales have been weak for the last ten months, as the previous double-digit year-over-year growth was in September 2024. The reason is tough competition in the Chinese market, where Model Y is under lots of pressure from local rivals and a decrease in exports to the overseas market.

Tesla China operates one car plant in Shanghai, which produces only two models: the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV.

Tesla plans to launch the six-seater Model Y L in China in the autumn to compete with China’s popular MPVs and massive three-row SUVs such as Li Auto i8, Onvo L90 or Aito M8.

The larger Model Y L will have a 150 mm longer wheelbase than the 5-seater Model Y and be 179 mm longer, China’s regulator revealed in July. The exact dimensions of the new 6-seater are: length of 4,976 mm, a width of 1,920 mm, and a height of 1,668 mm, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. The curb weight will be 2,088 kg, which is 96 kg more than the 5-seater version. It will feature ternary NMC batteries from LG.

Model Y was Tesla’s flagship in China. In 2024, Tesla sold 480,309 units, making it the best-selling car in China. It accounted for 74.6% of Tesla’s sales domestically; the rest goes to Model 3 sedan sales. The mid-size SUV managed to sell quite well, even under pressure from numerous Chinese EV makers, including Xpeng G6, Deepal S7, Zeekr 7X, and Onvo L60.

However, since launching the facelifted version called Juniper in January, Model Y is losing momentum in China. In the first half of 2025, it sold 171,491 units, representing a 17.5% year-over-year decrease.

The breakdown of Tesla China sales to domestic and export will be available later this month as CPCA share it.
