Tesla China back to slight growth in September, selling 90,812 cars
Tesla China sold 90,812 cars in September, up 9.2% from August and 2.8% up from the same month last year. Between January and September, Tesla China sold 606,364 vehicles, down 10.3% from the same period the previous year.
This breaks the two-month year-over-year (YoY) decline in August and July.
The YoY growth is most likely driven by the new Model Y L, the six-seater variant of Tesla’s best-selling SUV. Model Y L with three rows of seats was launched on August 19 in China and began deliveries in early September.
Tesla China sales are shared by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) and include cars sold from Tesla’s Shanghai factory, including domestic sales and exports. The Shanghai plant produces only the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV and its variants.
In the third quarter (Q3), Tesla China sold 241,89 vehicles, up 26.2% from Q2, but down 2.9% from Q3 last year. This represents 48.7% of Tesla’s global sales of 497,099 units.
The breakdown of domestic retail sales and exports for September is not yet available and will be published next week by the car associations.
On Thursday, Tesla applied for homologation of a new variant of Model Y in China, the regulator under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed. It is the Long Range RWD variant, with an LG battery and a single rear-wheel drive motor, with a range most likely over 800 km CLTC.
