Volkswagen Group China CEO Ralf Brandstaetter shared a photo of the mass-produced ID. Era EREV crossover was developed for the Chinese market. He stated that this model is quite close to the concept car. It is expected to enter China in 2026, with a potential debut at the Beijing Auto Show.

The Volkswagen ID. Era is the brand’s first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) developed jointly by VW and SAIC. Its concept variant was revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025 as a full-size SUV for large families. Its highlights include three rows of seats (with six or seven seat layouts), a mixed range of over 1,000 km, and the L2 driver assistance system.

Ralf Brandstaetter shared a photo of the mass-produced ID. Era, covered with camouflage. Despite the thick protective film, we can notice that it aligns with the previously revealed concept car in terms of exterior styling. The ID. Era adopts two-storey headlights with thin running lights and LED headlamps. It has a high bonnet line, a flat roof, and a LiDAR sensor. Door handles of the ID. Era are retractable, despite new safety requirements previously released in China.

The Volkswagen ID. Era adopts wide wheel arches, multi-spoke rims, roof rails, and an active air intake. It also has conventional side-view mirrors and a charging port cover in the right rear fender. Interior of the ID. Era wasn’t officially revealed. However, we can notice that the car adopts a large screen and soft pillows on the driver’s headrest.

There is no information about the specs of the Volkswagen ID. Era SUV. However, its powertrain will likely align with SAIC’s IM Motor EREV powertrain. We will remind you that the IM LS6 fastback EREV crossover boasts an 800V platform with a 66 kWh battery for 450 km of CLTC range. This pack sends power to two electric motors with a peak power of 500 kW (670 hp).

It was previously reported that the ID. Era will begin volume production in April 2026. This schedule hints that this SUV will become available for purchase at the Beijing Auto Show 2026. The ID. Era will rival other large range extenders, including the Li L9 and the Aito M9. However, the sales volume of EREVs declines for five consecutive months in China, as local buyers prefer BEVs and PHEVs. It seems that Volkswagen missed the period of booming growth of range extenders.
