The BYD’s Denza N9 and the Denza N8L full-size luxury plug-in hybrid crossovers will get a 40% electric range boost in China due to a new battery pack. These modifications applied for a sales license in China, revealing core specs.
The Denza N9 flagship crossover entered the Chinese market on March 22, 2025. Shortly after, BYD updated this SUV to solidify its position among equally priced rivals. The cheaper Denza N8L started sales in October 2025. However, both these models fall short of expectations. Their combined deliveries reached 4,472 units from January to February 2026, according to China EV DataTracker. For clarity, the Zeekr 9X SUV from Geely delivered 11,481 units in the same period.
BYD clearly needed a plan B with its luxury SUV lineup. As a result, the world’s largest new energy vehicle maker is prepared to launch the updated versions of the N9 and the N8L with a bigger battery pack and increased electric range.
More about updated Denza N9 & N8L
According to the List of Energy-Saving and New Energy Vehicles Eligible for Vehicle and Vessel Tax Reductions provided by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the updated Denza N9 and the N8L will have a new LFP pack from the BYD subsidiary FinDreams. It is most likely the second-gen Blade battery revealed earlier in March 2026.

The new battery pack boasts a capacity of 75.264 kWh. For clarity, the Denza N9 previously used a 46.9 kWh pack, and the N8L had a 46.99 kWh battery. Thanks to the new battery pack, the electric range of both N-series crossovers surged by 40%. The Denza N9 can run up to 315 km on a single charge. The lighter N8L has a range of 320 km.
The new battery pack has one notable drawback. It weighs 550 kg. As a result, already large Denza-branded crossovers became hefty. The N9’s curb weight reaches 3,280 kg with a gross weight of 3,760 kg. The N8L is slightly lighter, providing a curb weight of 3,120 kg and a gross weight of 3,600 kg. This update can be called a forced measure, as most of Denza’s rivals (including upcoming cars) offer large batteries:
- Leapmotor D19 – 80.3 kWh
- Wey V9X – 77.7 kWh
- Li Auto L9 Livis – 72.7 kWh
- Zeekr 9X – 70 kWh
- IM LS9 – 66 kWh
- Voyah Taishan – 65 kWh
- Xpeng GX – 63.3 kWh
The Denza N9 is a full-size crossover with dimensions of 5258/2030/1830 mm. The wheelbase reaches 3,125 mm. It is a parallel hybrid with a 2-liter ICE for 152 kW (204 hp) and three electric motors for 680 kW (912 hp). The Denza N8L is slightly smaller with dimensions of 5200/1999/1820 mm and a wheelbase of 3,075 mm. It offers the same 2-liter engine and less powerful three e-motors for 560 kW (750 hp).
