Volvo to unveil China-made EX90 and ES90 EVs at 99th anniversary event on April 15
Volvo has officially announced that it will hold its 99th anniversary celebration and new product launch event on April 15, during which the automaker will introduce two all-electric models—the China-made Volvo EX90 and Volvo ES90.
The Volvo EX90, which was seen in the regulatory filings more than one year ago, made its debut even earlier in 2022.
This vehicle is built on the SPA2 platform and inherits the design language of its overseas counterpart. The front fascia features a closed grille design flanked by the brand’s “Thor’s Hammer” headlight clusters. The front bumper incorporates vertically positioned LED daytime running lights, complemented by an active grille ventilation system.

From the side profile, the EX90 is equipped with hidden door handles and features design lines inspired by yacht concepts. The vehicle achieves a drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd. Additionally, customers will have the option of a two-tone body finish. In terms of dimensions, the new model measures 5037mm in length, 1964mm in width, and 1742mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2985mm.

At the rear, the EX90 features semi-wrapped taillight clusters, with vertically arranged LED units positioned on both sides of the rear windshield.
Powertrain specifications:
- Low-power variant: Front motor 173kW (232hp), rear motor 127kW (170hp)
- High-power variant: Front motor 180kW (241hp), rear motor 200kW (268hp)
Both variants are equipped with ternary lithium batteries.

The Volvo ES90 adopts the latest family design language with a sleek and dynamic body profile. The front end features a closed design that emphasises its new energy identity, while the iconic Thor’s Hammer headlights incorporate a matrix design. For advanced driver assistance, customers can opt for a LiDAR system. The LiDAR-equipped version comes with one LiDAR sensor, five millimetre-wave radars, seven cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, powered by dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chips delivering 508 TOPS of computing power.

The ES90 measures 5000mm in length, 1942mm in width, and 1547mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3102mm. The door handles feature a new design, paired with dynamic multi-spoke alloy wheels.

At the rear, the model follows a design approach with C-shaped taillights featuring multiple internal light strips.

Powertrain and charging:
As Volvo’s first model built on an 800V high-voltage platform, the ES90 features upgrades to key components, including battery cells, electric drive system, inverter, charging system, and thermal management system. This makes it the fastest-charging and longest-range Volvo in history.
The new battery management system enables charging from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes, with a maximum charging power of 350kW. The single-charge range exceeds 700km.

I don’t know why it’s taking so long for the EX90 to launch in China, but it better hurry up, otherwise flush door handles will be banned in China starting next year.
