Fresh rumors on the Mercedes-Benz R-class. It might be made in China by the Fujian-Benz joint venture. Fujian-Benz makes vans, like the Viano. Earlier rumors said the joint venture was going to make the Benz ML but that didn’t happen yet.

The R-class is currently imported in China and therefore expensive. Price starts at 698.000 yuan and ends at 1.24 million yuan. It doesn’t sell in any significant numbers. Local production will lower the price by around 20% but whether it will sell then is not very sure. The Chinese car buyer does like to buy expensive imported ML, GL, an G-class cars. The R is likely too weird for China, just like it is for the rest of the world.
