The Volkswagen Polo GTI debuted today at the Chengdu Auto Show, it will be launched on the China auto market on September 13, it is made in China by the Shanghai-GM joint venture. It loox the same as the European GTI but is has a very different engine. The European Polo GTI comes with a decent 180hp 1.4 TSI, the Chinese Polo GTI will have to do with a 131hp 1.4 turbo.

Strangely, this old engine has been mated with a very modern 7-speed DSG. What on earth, are those Chinese-Germans thinking here? It is just a weird machine and price will likely start around 150.000 yuan, which is very expensive, but we also hear it would be 170.000 yuan, which is plain crazy. For a fake Polo GTI! If Chinese car buyers fall for it the joint venture will earn a lot of money, if they don’t, the GTI-brand will loose a lot of its credibility. Risky bet.
