BYD’s sub-brand, Yangwang Auto, has released the official interior images for the Yangwang U8. The new SUV will make its official debut at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show on April 18 at 9:40 am Chinese time. The automaker had earlier announced that the U8 would begin presales at the event and would be launched alongside the Yangwang U9.

According to Yangwang, its two new models will not be displayed on BYD’s stands at the Shanghai Auto Show. Instead, Yangwang Auto will have an independent booth. Now, let’s take a peek inside the U8.

Yangwang U8 Seat Layout

CarNewsChina had published earlier spy shot images of the U8 showing a 7-seat layout (2+2+3). In those images, the second row is equipped with two independent air seats (non-fixed armrests), and the third seat can be folded, thus freeing up some space. However, the new interior images released by Yangwang do very little to confirm that.

The new images do not show a middle row: all we see are the front and rear rows. There’s the possibility of two versions: 5- and 7-seat versions. In a couple of days, we’ll find out for sure.

Yangwang U8 Star Ring Cockpit

For all the U8’s menacing looks, it sports a very comfy interior, which is quite a contrast. Even though auto enthusiasts have come to expect luxurious interiors in offroad cars such as the Jeep Wrangler and Range Rover, the Yangwang U8 goes an extra length. The interior feels reserved for a Bentley or Rolls-Royce.

Yangwang calls the interior theme “Halo Cockpit” All seats are draped in brown Nappa leather, and there’s a sky roof with a floating starry sky headliner that can be customized in different patterns.

U8 Screens/Dashboard

The Yangwang U8 comes with a vertical 12.8-inch Galaxy curved screen with an inclination angle of 37°. It uses a curved OLED panel with excellent contrast and bright colors. There’s also the 23.6-inch instrument screen and passenger entertainment screen pass through the back of the Galaxy curved screen.

There are physical buttons and control levers under the central control screen, and the center console is equipped with a wireless charging panel. Since the entire center console is almost occupied by the screen, the air conditioner outlets are placed on top of the center console.

Rear-row passengers are kept entertained with two 12.8-inch floating screens. This is complemented by the Evidence Series Hi-End audio system with 22 speakers, giving occupants a 3D immersive sound experience.

The U8 is equipped with a four-spoke steering wheel, and the top of the steering wheel has an auxiliary driving indicator light, while the bottom can also be used to adjust the driving mode and terrain mode.

Yangwang U8 Overview

BYD Yangwang U8 SUV

BYD Yangwang U8 was unveiled in January as a premium off-road SUV to compete with the electric Mercedes G-Wagon or Hummer EV. It was presented as a ‘million yuan’ car, and the price is expected to start at 800,000 yuan ($110,000). However, this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, so price revelation is one of the important pieces of information we expect from the April 18 event.

The BYD Yangwang revealed the U8’s dimensions last month, and as expected – the EV is huge – 5319/2050/1930 mm (length/width/height), while the wheelbase is 3050 mm. The car sits on BYD’s E4 (Ysifang) platform, which is supposed to support both pure EVs and PHEVs.

The U8 has four electric motors, one for each wheel. Each has a power of about 275 hp and 320 Nm torque, meaning the full power of U8 is 1100 hp. Thanks to its four motors, the U8 is capable of 360-degree tank turns and crab walking. It can also float on the water, according to videos released by BYD. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is in 3 seconds.

BYD Yangwang U8 SUV is expected to go on sale in August.
