BYD sold 253,046 EVs and PHEVs in June, creating a new historical record

In June, BYD sold 253,046 new energy vehicles (NEVs), representing an increase of 88% compared to last year. This achievement broke BYD’s sales record of 240,220 units in May 2023. The cumulative sales for H1 2023 reached 1,255,637 units, marking a year-on-year increase of 95%.

The production of BYD’s new energy vehicles in June reached an impressive 252,657 units, exhibiting a year-on-year increase of 87%.

Analyzing the sales breakdown, BYD sold 239,092 passenger vehicles in June, reflecting a significant year-on-year increase of 109%. Among these sales, pure electric models accounted for 128,196 units, exhibiting a substantial growth of 84% compared to last year. The cumulative sales of pure electric models in 2023 reached 616,810 units, representing a noteworthy year-on-year increase of 90%. Additionally, plug-in hybrid models achieved impressive sales figures, with 123,489 units sold in June, demonstrating a year-on-year growth of 92%. The cumulative sales of plug-in hybrid models in 2023 totaled 631,351 units, showcasing a remarkable year-on-year increase of 100%.

Among them, Denza, the joint venture brand between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, sold 11,058 vehicles in May. The only Denza model currently on sale is the Denza D9 MPV. On July 3, Denza will release the pure electric coupe SUV Denza N7, and we will continue to follow up on the report.

The company also experienced substantial growth in overseas sales of new energy passenger vehicles, reaching 10,536 units in June 2023. This represents a remarkable year-on-year increase of 383%. From January to June 2023, the cumulative overseas sales volume is 74,289 vehicles, an increase of 11 times year-on-year.

Furthermore, BYD continues to excel in battery production. In June, the company achieved an installed capacity of approximately 11.816 GWh for new energy vehicle power and storage batteries. The cumulative installed capacity for 2023 reached an impressive 60.250 GWh.

At present, many manufacturers have announced the latest June results. The following summarizes the vehicle delivery/sales data of each brand in May as follows:

  • GAC Aion delivered 45,013 units in June, up 86% year-on-year.
  • Li Auto delivered 32,575 new cars in June, up 150% year-on-year.
  • Neta delivered 12,132 units in June, down 8% year-on-year.
  • Leap delivered 13,209 units in June, up 17% year-on-year.
  • Zeekr Auto delivered 10,620 vehicles in June, up 124% year-on-year.
  • Xpeng delivered 8,620 new cars in June, down 43% year-on-year.
  • Changan Shenlan delivered 8,041 units in June.
  • Nio delivered 10,707 units in June, down 12% year-on-year.

  1. The overseas numbers are catastrophic. They are not growing (month on month) despite new countries added month after month. How to achieve the target of 800,000 overseas registrations in 2023, if there are just 10,000 per month?

    • The most important reason is that the ships ordered by BYD from the shipyard will not be delivered until after August, as the current ships are leased. Currently, the rental ship has a monthly capacity of only 10-15k vehicles
