In 2021 SAIC Volkswagen first debuted the ID.3 in China. The company is back with a new iteration in 2024 for both the ID.3 and ID.4 models. With updated information and specs on its official site, the ID.3 has launched with two configurations priced at 163,888 yuan (USD 23,000) and 171,388 yuan (USD 24,000). This price point is higher than its previous iteration after the announcement of price cuts last year and a starting price of USD 16,600.
The car offers four exterior colors (Aurora Green, Ion Grey, Bay Blue, and Star White) and two interior options (Jupiter Gold and Dark Magnetic Field). While largely similar to its predecessors, the updated model showcases subtle exterior changes, including a closed front grille, a new style of LED headlights, and a more sporty, aerodynamic profile. At the rear, the design features a rounded look with a small spoiler at the roof’s end, enhancing its sporty appeal. With dimensions identical to the previous model, measuring 4261/1778/1568mm (length/width/height) and a wheelbase of 2765mm, the car while still very much a compact size, is roomy enough for its passengers.
Inside, the ID.3 maintains a minimalist design with a compact full LCD instrument panel, a floating multimedia system supporting Apple CarPlay, and integrated electronic shift controls, optimizing storage space in the center console. Under the hood, it houses a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 125kW of power and a peak torque of 310Nm. The car boasts a CLTC (China’s standardized testing) comprehensive operating range of 450 kilometers thanks to 52.8kWh battery. For comparison, the new Model 3 rear-wheel drive has a CLTC operating range of 606km.
As for the ID.4, a broader array of four price points are available ranging from 195,000 yuan (27,000 USD) to 283,000 yuan (38,000 USD). In terms of power, the new Volkswagen ID.4 with its CLTC system has a projected operating mileage of 425km, 601km, and 555km with a maximum power of 125kW, 150kW, and 230kW available respectively. Further details and features of the vehicles should be updated on the official site soon.
The difference is that the ID.3 is a better made car than the Model 3, and more reliable to own. Check the reliability records over the past few years, but my 3 year old ID.3 has had 1 issue, a screen problem, that was rectified in a single day. It’s been trouble free and effortless to own, and much easier to park and drive in narrow roads. My friends’ Model 3 lease is already being given up and will take a ID.5 instead, so much were the hassels with the service and support of Tesla. VW has a lot riding on making good, solid EVs, while Tesla seems to be coasting. You choose.
I don’t think the range comparison between the Model 3 and the ID 3 is good.
The Model 3 is significantly more expensive and is more in the price range of an ID4.
If you compare the range of the ID4 with the Model 3 then it’s pretty much the same.
In addition, both the ID3 and the ID4 are significantly better cars overall than the Model 3.
Sure, model 3 is different class and much higher price. This is more for reference of CLTC, as people keep asking us – how does CLTC compare to EPA. As most people know the EPA range of Model 3, we mentioned it here so people make their picture what 450 km CLTC mean. But you are right we might put the CLTC range of some more comparable vehicle next time.
This update will flop in China because it is not as cheap as BYDs cars. But then again VW does not get all the hidden subsidies like the chinese car makers all get (especially BYD)
“Hidden subsidies” – if can’t find it then it must be hidden, trust me bro, lol. Must be magic MIC ID.3 being 1/3 the price of EU’s then
OMG, the price of ID3 in China market that has not yet received “hidden subsidies” is already one-third of that of Germany’s. Assuming ID3 receives subsidies, the Germanse will lose even more!
