Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has launched its fourth-generation battery charging and swap stations, marking another step forward for the automaker. The new stations, which debuted in Guangzhou and Lu’an, Anhui, boast a 22% improvement in swap speed and support for multiple vehicle brands and models. In the last several months, multiple announcements with other brands, such as GAC, Changan, Cherry, and Geely, have been made.

The key features of Nio’s fourth-generation charging and swap stations include:

Enhanced Swap Speed: The stations now offer a 22% faster battery swap process, with the fastest swap taking just 2 minutes and 24 seconds.

Increased Battery Capacity: The stations feature 23 battery storage slots, an increase from previous generations, allowing for a higher daily service capacity of up to 480 swaps. Nio’s second-generation station had storage for 13 batteries, while the capacity of the third-generation is 21.

Advanced Sensor Technology: Each station has 6 wide-angle -Lidar units and 4 Orin X chips, providing a total computing power of 1016 TOPS. This enables seamless, one-touch automatic battery swapping and self-initiated swapping even when the driver is away from the vehicle. It should be noted that the second generation of Nio cars also have 4 Orin X chips, which make up the Adam supercomputer.

Improved Efficiency and Versatility: The new stations can serve a wider range of EV models from multiple brands, further enhancing the accessibility for Nio owners and potentially expanding Nio’s ecosystem. Notably, the fourth generation supports Nio’s Onvo brand without modifications—third-generation stations require modification before they are compatible with Onvo’s battery packs.

The Guangzhou Lingnan Huade Plaza station is the 108th swap station in the city. It is strategically located near major transportation hubs like the Guangzhou Ring Expressway, Guangfo Expressway, and Guangzhou Airport Expressway. This strategic placement aims to strengthen the charging and swap service network in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and improve the user experience.

Additionally, Nio has introduced a high-power 640 kW liquid-cooled supercharging station capable of delivering a maximum output current of 765A and a maximum voltage of 1000V. The lightweight, 2.4 kg charging gun is designed for one-handed operation.

As of June 13th, 2023, Nio has built a network of 2,432 swap stations and 22,633 charging stations across China, including 804 high-speed swap stations and 1,650 high-speed supercharging piles. This latest generation of charging and swap stations shows that Nio plans to continue pushing the envelope for a more efficient EV ownership experience.
