The SAIC-backed MG has had relatively slow sales in China recently. Its domestic sales volume from January to September 2024 reached 56,511 units, down 20.2% Y-O-Y, and down 81.3% compared to the same period of 2022. MG needs a new volume product to attract Chinese customers. It seems that the MG ES5 will try to amplify the brand’s sales performance.

More about MG ES5

The MG ES5 is a compact SUV that adopts the brand’s latest design language. It has sharp LED running lights and an aggressive front bumper. However, the ES5’s overall look is a bit bulky due to a closed front end, wide wheel arches with plastic trim, and a curved bonnet line. The dimensions of the MG’s latest electric product are 4476/1849/1621 mm with a wheelbase of 2730 mm. It rides on R17 or R18 wheels.

MG is very proud of the ES5’s center of gravity of just 530 mm. The brand’s officials highlighted they’ve reached such a number because of the world’s slimmest with a height of 110 mm. The lower center of gravity means better handling. Moreover, the ES5 also has a 50-50 weight distribution on the axles. These are impressive numbers for an urban crossover. The ES5 adopts a McPherson suspension in the front and a five-link independent suspension in the rear.

The interior of the MG ES5 adopts minimalistic styling. It has a large 15.6-inch floating screen, an LCD 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a gear shifter mounted behind the three-spoke D-shaped steering wheel. The center tunnel also has a wireless charging pad and a pair of cup holders. The entry-level of this BEV has four speakers, and other trims offer up to six.

The MG ES5 has two CATL-made LFP battery options: 40.1 kWh and 62.2 kWh. This crossover comes standard with a 125-kW (168 hp) synchronous permanent magnet electric motor in the rear axle. Depending on the battery variant, its zero-to-hundred acceleration time is 7.7-7.9 seconds. The MG ES5’s CLTC range is 425 – 525 km.

MG ES5 prices

MG was quite creative with the pricing of the ES5 for the Chinese market. The ex-British automaker announced the suggested retail price of this car. Then, the brand’s officials presented a limited-time discount of 10,000 yuan (1,400 USD) for each trim level of the ES5. As the icing on the cake, MG introduced the 10,000 yuan trade-in subsidy for the ES5. So, Chinese customers can buy the ES5 with a 20,000 yuan (2,800 USD) discount.
