Tesla sales drop globally, but company grew 9% in China to record-breaking 657,000 EVs

Tesla sold about 83,000 EVs in China in December, up 18.9% from November, marking its best month ever. This brings the 2024 cumulative sales in China to a record-breaking 657,000 EVs, up 8.8% from about 604,000 in 2023.

Tesla exported 10,766 EVs from China in December, meaning the Shanghai plant wholesales were 93,766 units. This brings Tesla China wholesales (including export) to 916,660 units, down 3.3% from 947,742 units in 2023.

The US automaker exported 259,485 EVs from China in 2024, down 24.6% from 344,078 units in 2023. Tesla produces only Model 3 and Model Y in the Shanghai plant.

In 2024, Tesla delivered 1,789,226 EVs globally, down 1.1% from 2023, its first annual decline in a dozen years. With 657,000 units, China contributed 37% to the Tesla’s global deliveries.

Recently, Tesla China has been busy. The company completed and started trial production in its second plant in Shanghai last week, and soon, it will begin deploying V4 Supercharge Cabinets that provide up to 500 kW of charging power across the country.

Also, by the end of the month, Tesla China will reportedly start mass production of a facelifted Tesla Model Y codenamed Juniper. The updated 5-seater will be joined by a three-row 6-seater Model Y in the fourth quarter of 2025.
