Geely Galaxy Starship 9 PHEV crossover spotted in China during road tests

The Geely Galaxy Starship 9 flagship crossover with a Leishen plug-in hybrid powertrain was seen in China during road tests. Geely is getting ready to launch this car in China this year as the entry-level offer in the full-size SUV segment. It will cost between 200,000 – 300,000 yuan (27,500 – 41,260 USD).

Geely is actively exploring the full-size SUV segment in China. Last month, its subsidiary Zeekr Technology launched the Lynk & Co 900 crossover with a starting price of 309,900 yuan (42,520 USD). At the same time, Zeekr Technology released its ultimate flagship, the Zeekr 9X SUV, at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025. The latter SUV will start sales in China in Q3 with a price tag above 500,000 yuan (68,760 USD). This year, Geely Group will also launch the entry-level car in the same segment, which is the Geely Galaxy Starship 9.

Geely Galaxy Starship concept car

The Geely Galaxy is an independent brand under the Geely Group, launched in 2023. It wasn’t selling well initially due to a limited model range. Last year, the young Geely brand expanded its offering with the Galaxy E5 (Geely EX5) electric SUV, the Galaxy Xingyuan electric crossover, and the Geely Starship 7 plug-in hybrid crossover. As a result, Galaxy sales volume rose by 3.8 times in Q1 2025 year-over-year. Starship 9 will become another driver for maintaining steady sales increases.

More about Geely Galaxy Starship 9

The Geely Galaxy Starship 9 is based on the Galaxy Starship concept car first introduced at the Beijing Auto Show 2024. It was a large SUV with suicide doors, cameras instead of side-view mirrors, hidden door handles, and fuzzy wheels. Last year, this concept car won the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2024.

The pre-production variant of the Geely Galaxy Starship 9 was spotted in China during road tests, wearing heavy camouflage. It retained the body outline of the previously revealed concept car. However, the mass-produced variant of this vehicle has regular rear doors instead of rear-hinged ones. It also has conventional side-view mirrors.

The taillight unit of the Galaxy Starship 9 retained the distinguishing shape and the Geely inscription. It hints that this vehicle will sell overseas under the Geely brand, similar to the Galaxy E5 (known overseas as Geely EX5). The front end of the Galaxy Starship 9 has a LiDAR sensor on the roof. The vehicle’s front bumper has a sizeable air intake with an integrated mm-wave radar. The car has sizeable rims and a fuel door in the left rear fender.

The Galaxy Starship 9 stands on Geely’s GEA (Global Intelligent Electric Architecture). The powertrain is a Leishen 2.0 (NordThor 2.0) PHEV system. It comprises a 1.5-liter engine with the Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive.
