The China-made Volvo XC70 PHEV crossover revealed a battery for 39.6 kWh and 180 km of electric range under CLTC conditions. This SUV boasts a plug-in hybrid system with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine under the hood.
Volvo has recently resurrected the XC70 name by teasing its newly developed SUV. Previously, the XC70 was more of a lifted crossover. Its successor will become a classy crossover with a PEHV powertrain and the EX90-like styling. This model has applied for a sales license in China, revealing its core specs. Thanks to the regulator’s listing, the XC70 PHEV revealed battery information.
The Volvo XC70 adopts the brand’s distinguishing design language with Thor’s Hammer taillights. This model has vertically aligned taillights, retractable door handles, and frameless mirrors. The XC70 boasts headlights integrated into the front bumper. An active air intake in the front is another highlight.
The dimensions of the China-made Volvo XC70 are 4815/1890/1650 mm and have a wheelbase of 2,895 mm. For clarity, the China-Swedish SUV is 60 mm longer, 30 mm narrower, and 10 mm lower than the BMW X3 G45. The Volvo XC70’s front and rear tracks are equal to 1,623 mm. Approach and departure angles are 18 and 21 degrees, respectively.
The entry-level Volvo XC70 rides on 19-inch wheels with 234/50 or 235/55 tires. It can also be equipped with 255/45 R20 and 255/40 R21 wheels. The curb weight of this model lies in the 2,110 – 2,275 kg range, depending on the battery option.
The Volvo XC70 is the first model that stands on the brand’s newest SMA platform. It adopts a plug-in hybrid system with the 1.5-liter turbocharged BHE15-BFZ engine manufactured by Aurobay. We will remind you that the latter company has recently become a part of the Geely-Renault joint venture called Horse Powertrain.
The Aurobay’s BHE15 engine series usually works in pairs with a 3-speed 3DHT100 transmission. In April 2025, this combination was recognized by the Pace Award. The BHE15-BFZ is also used for such Chinese PHEV cars as the Geely Galaxy L7, the Geely Galaxy L6, the Geely Preface L, the Lynk & Co 07, and the Lynk & Co 08. The peak power output of this ICE reaches 120 kW (161 hp). The car’s top speed is 180 km/h.
There is currently no information about the XC70’s electric motors. However, the Chinese regulator revealed detailed information about its batteries. The entry-level Volvo XC70 adopts an LFP battery pack from CATL with a capacity of 21.22 kWh. It provides an electric range of 100 km under CLTC conditions. This variant of the Volvo XC70 has a fuel consumption of 5.85 liters per 100 km with a drained battery. The battery weighs 189 kg.
The XC70 also boasts a bigger ternary NMC battery pack for 39.63 kWh. This pack makes a significant boost of electric range to 180 km under CLTC conditions. However, it weighs 243 kg. It means a higher fuel capacity of 6,55 liters per 100 km with a drained battery.
The Volvo XC70 was developed with China in mind. The automaker’s goal was to offer local customers a plug-in hybrid car with enough electric range. There is no information on whether the Volvo XC70 will go global.
