BYD Seagull (Dolphin Surf) production tops 1 million units
BYD announced that its entry-level hatchback has hit 1 million units produced at today’s media event. The Seagull launched two years and two months ago in April 2023.
Seagull is BYD’s cheapest car, priced between 63,800 – 82,800 yuan (8,900 – 11,500 USD). In May, it was the second-best-selling car in China, trailing only the Geely Xinguan. BYD announced it sold 60,131 units in May, however, only about half, 31,105, were sold in China, according to insurance registrations monitored by China EV DataTracker. That suggests 29,026 shipped to overseas markets.

Last month, Seagull launched in 15 European countries as Dolphin Surf, starting at 22,990 EUR (26,900 USD). The European version is 210 mm longer, and the base trim has the same battery and slightly stronger e-motor.
In China, the base trim features a 30 kWh LFP battery, providing a 305 km CLTC range. It is powered by a 55 kW motor, the 0-50 km/h acceleration is 4.9 seconds, and the 0-100km/h acceleration is yes.
The price is 63,900 yuan, and the customer can enjoy a 20,000 yuan government trade-in subsidy, in addition to BYD’s trade-in subsidy of 4,000 yuan. BYD also offers financing options with zero down payment and 0% interest.

As of 31st May, 992,637 units were sold globally, according to BYD figures, meaning 1 million sales were hit in the first week of June.
In 2025 so far (Jan-May), BYD sold 233,126 units of Seagull, up 50% from the same period last year, according to the company’s official figures. BYD Seagull is the third best-selling model in China in 2025 so far (Jan-May) with 144,204 units, behind Geely and Wuling.
