MG has unveiled an updated version of the MG4 EV for the Chinese market, with a domestic launch planned for September 5 and pre-orders set to open on August 5. The revised hatchback is part of SAIC Motor’s broader plan to expand its electrified lineup, following the weak domestic performance of the previous MG4, but with stronger demand in overseas markets, especially in Europe and the UK.

The new MG4 is larger than before, now measuring 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. It uses a rear-mounted 120 kW permanent magnet motor and a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack supplied by Rept Battery Energy. Top speed is rated at 160 km/h. Battery capacity and range figures have not been disclosed.

According to Auto-home, MG brand director Chen Cui has hinted that the model may be among the first to feature a semi-solid-state battery as standard.

The updated version introduces a cockpit system co-developed with Oppo. The new in-car interface supports smartphone mirroring, voice commands, and gesture-based navigation, aiming for interaction across Oppo, Huawei, and Apple devices. MG says the system eliminates the need to download or update apps directly on the vehicle.

Design updates include a closed front grille, arrow-style taillights, and a full-width rear light bar. Traditional door handles and 17-inch alloy wheels remain, while the charging port stays on the left front fender. The vehicle continues to ride on SAIC’s Nebula EV platform.

Though sales of the previous MG4 have been low in China—just 13 units were sold in February 2025—the car has performed strongly overseas. In the first quarter of 2025, MG Motor Europe registered 78,505 new vehicles, representing a 33.5% year-over-year increase. The MG4 EV was a key contributor to this growth. In the UK alone, MG registered 24,641 vehicles in Q1 2025, a 6.5% increase from the previous year, with the MG4 accumulating over 40,000 units sold since its launch.

MG plans to launch 13 new electrified models globally over the next two years, supported by an investment of approximately 100 billion yuan (approximately 14 billion USD). The MG4 will remain central to this expansion, particularly in Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, where compact EVs continue to gain traction.
