First official photos of the Leapmotor Lafa 5 electric hatchback from the Stellantis-backed Chinese startup were shared days before this model breaks cover at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich on September 8. This compact BEV for global markets aims to rival the Volkswagen ID.3.
The Leapmotor Lafa 5 was previously known by its codename B05. It is a compact hatchback that stands on the LEAP 3.5 modular architecture, similar to the B10 crossover. On September 1, the Stellantis-backed Chinese automaker shared teaser images of this model and revealed its official name. On September 4, Leapmotor released official photos of this hatchback covered with camouflage.
More about Leapmotor Lafa 5
As mentioned, the Leapmotor Lafa 5 is wearing camouflage film in the photos. Its front end follows the brand’s design language with curved headlights joined by an LED strip. The car has a closed front end with an air intake in the front bumper. A millimeter-wave radar also sits in the bumper. The Lafa 5 adopts a sleek bonnet line and retractable door handles to reduce drag.

From the back, this EV has sculpted fenders, a roof spoiler, and a single taillight unit. This vehicle has a relatively small tailgate and a minimalistic bumper. Interestingly, the Lafa 5 was shown in teaser images with a LiDAR on the roof. However, the car in live photos doesn’t have this sensor. It seems that only some specific trim levels offer LiDAR.
There is still no information about the specs of the Leapmotor Lafa 5. However, it seems that this vehicle will be on par with the Volkswagen ID.3 in terms of size. The German hatchback’s length, width, and height are 4,262 mm, 1,809 mm, and 1,552 mm, respectively. The powertrain of the Lafa 5 will likely align with the B10 crossover. Its entry-level trim offers a single e-motor for 132 kW (177 hp) and an LFP battery for 56.2 kWh. The top-trim car has an electric motor for 160 kW (215 hp) and a 67.1 kWh LFP battery.
The Leapmotor Lafa 5 will debut at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich on September 8. Leapmotor Technology Senior Vice President Cao Lin shared that “the arrival of Leapmotor Lafa 5 will become the new main force for Leapmotor to conquer overseas markets in the future”. It clearly hints that Lepamotor positions this model as a product for markets outside China.
Leapmotor was partly acquired by Stellantis last year. Since then, Leapmotor has been actively developing its overseas business. From January to August 2025, this Chinese brand managed to sell 328,859 cars, reaching the semi-annual net profit. The Leapmotor’s current model line comprises seven models domestically. However, it sells three vehicles globally.
