The Leapmotor D19 full-size SUV launched in China with the world’s largest EREV battery that boasts a capacity of 80.3 kWh. This 5.2-meter family driver can run up to 500 km with the ICE turned off. Moreover, the Leapmotor D19 starts at 219,800 yuan (32,240 USD), indicating good cost control of the Stellantis-backed brand.

Exterior & interior

The Leapmotor D19 entered the Chinese market on April 16 as the flagship SUV in the brand’s lineup. It adopts the brand’s latest design language with split headlights, smooth surfaces, and retractable door handles. The D19 is a massive family driver with dimensions of 5252/1995/1780 mm. The wheelbase reaches 3,110 mm. For clarity, it is 71 mm longer than the BMW X7. All variants of the D19 come standard with 21-inch wheels.

The car’s interior offers two layout variants for seven and six seats. There is a large 17.3-inch touchscreen in the center console, complemented by a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster and a 60-inch augmented reality display. The second-row passengers enjoy a ceiling-mounted 21.4-inch monitor and a 6-inch control screen. Another highlight of the car’s cabin is 23 speakers. The car has an oxygen generation system and an 8.1-liter built-in fridge.

The six-seat Leapmotor D19 adopts two captain chairs with zero-gravity functions. Its central aisle width is 195 mm, and the right-side seat supports electric sliding. The second-row seats of the seven-seat variant could be reclined to 145 degrees. Both the second and the third row seats support electric sunshades.

It is worth noting that the Leapmotor D19 adopts 28 assisted driving sensors, including a LiDAR on the roof. The car supports the Navigate On Autopilot (NOA) function on urban roads and highways. It is also capable of performing an autonomous emergency braking at speeds between 4 and 150 km/h and avoiding obstacles on roads within the 80 – 130 km/h range. The Leapmotor D19 adopts a continuous damping system and dual-chamber air suspension. It allows the car to adjust the ride height in a 55 mm range.

Powertrain & prices

The Leapmotor D19 offers two powertrain variants. The first is EREV with a 1.5-liter turbocharged range extender under the hood. It sends energy to electric motors and a battery. The D19 EREV comes with a dual-motor 4WD with a combined peak power of 300 kW (402 hp) as standard. Two battery options are available for 63.7 kWh and 80.3 kWh. The BEV range lies between 400 and 500 km under CLTC conditions. Thanks to the 800V system, the D19 charges the battery from 30% to 80% in 15 minutes.

The BEV version of the Leapmotor D19 adopts a 1,000V system. It comes standard with two e-motors for 410 kW (550 hp) and two batteries for 99.6 kWh and 115 kWh. The electric range is 620 – 720 km (CLTC). The three-motor version of the D19 EV is also available. It has a 115 kWh battery on board and a peak power of 540 kW (724 hp). Its zero-to-hundred acceleration is 3.94 seconds. Trims and prices of the Leapmotor D19 are as follows:

Editor’s comment

The EREV version of the Leapmotor D19 previously made headlines due to the highest battery capacity among plug-in hybrid cars. With the official price tag released, the D19 turns into a dangerous rival for many full-size crossovers. Its core rivals include the Geely Galaxy M9 and the Deepal S09. Both these cars have almost two times smaller batteries.

The vast majority of PHEV and EREV car buyers in China prefer to drive most of the time in BEV mode. It seems that Leapmotor may become the optimal choice for such buyers, taking market share from competitors.
