In the wake of a tragic accident involving its SU7 electric sedan (see specs) that claimed the lives of three university students, Xiaomi has released a comprehensive statement addressing the incident and subsequent public concerns. The crash, which occurred on the evening of March 29, 2025, in Anhui Province, marks the first reported fatality involving Xiaomi’s vehicle since its market debut.

Xiaomi’s response outlines a meticulous timeline of events leading up to the collision based on data retrieved from the vehicle’s systems. According to the company, the SU7 operated in its Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) mode at 116 km/h when approaching a construction zone with lane closures. The vehicle’s advanced driver-assistance system detected the obstacle and initiated warnings, prompting the driver to take manual control. Despite subsequent braking and steering inputs, the sedan collided with a concrete barrier at an estimated 97 km/h speed.

The automaker emphasized that its emergency response systems activated immediately after impact. The built-in eCall feature automatically notified authorities while simultaneously reaching out to the vehicle’s registered owner, who confirmed another individual was operating the car at the time of the accident. Emergency services were dispatched promptly, arriving at the scene approximately 15 minutes after the collision was detected.

Addressing widespread speculation on Chinese social media regarding door functionality, Xiaomi explicitly clarified the SU7’s safety features. Company representatives confirmed that all four doors are equipped with mechanical emergency release mechanisms strategically positioned in the storage compartments of each door panel. These backup systems are designed to function independently of electrical power, ensuring occupants can exit the vehicle even in cases of severe battery damage.

Xiaomi has mobilized a dedicated investigation team to cooperate fully with police authorities in Tongling. The company has pledged ongoing support to the victims’ families while maintaining a commitment to transparency throughout the investigative process. In its statement, Xiaomi expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of life while reaffirming its dedication to vehicle safety and continuous improvement of its technologies.

The incident has drawn significant attention to Xiaomi’s emerging automotive division, particularly regarding the performance of its driver-assistance systems in complex road conditions. As the investigation progresses, industry observers anticipate that further details may appear about the interplay between human intervention and automated safety features in critical situations.

The company’s response appears aimed at maintaining consumer confidence while awaiting official findings from authorities. Xiaomi has indicated it will provide updates as more information becomes available through proper investigative channels.
