On April 24, Hongqi unveiled its first high-end new energy hard-core off-road SUV at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, signaling the brand’s entry into the off-roader market in China. At the same time, Hongqi launched the campaign inviting the public around the world to name the new car. The winner will receive the car for free once launched.

It is worth mentioning that in recent years, more and more domestic Chinese automakers are eyeing the high-end luxury new energy off-road vehicle market. For example, in October 2024, Geely announced its entry into the off-road market with the Geely Cowboy. Since 2021, the sales of mid-to-high-end hard-core off-road vehicles have increased by an average annual rate of more than 30% in China. In particular, in the past two years, PHEV and EREV have become the mainstream powertrains for mid-to-high-end off-road vehicles.

Now, more about Hongqi’s off-roader below.

Hongqi claimed the exterior adopts the “mortise and tenon joint” element of ancient Chinese architecture, a traditional woodworking method of joining two or more components. In the front, the geometrical grille is paired with round headlights that resemble the human eye structure and the red Hongqi brand logo strip. A roof-mounted lidar and a camera on the front fender are also present, indicating advanced driving assistance functions.

At the rear, popular hardcore off-road SUV elements including the external spare tire, side-opening tailgate, and longitudinal taillights are present.

From the side, the boxy body shape is matched with a desert yellow and black paint scheme, a side ladder, roof racks, side steps, and thick wheel eyebrows.

The dash of red Hongqi brand design element also appears throughout the vehicle such as the center hub on the rim and wheel eyebrows.

Furthermore, the new car will come with a four-motor system self-developed by Hongqi that can accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in 4 seconds, combined with triple differential locks. We’ll watch closely for more info regarding the powertrain spec from Hongqi.
