GWM launched a luxury plug-in hybrid MPV series under the Wey brand

GWM launched the luxury plug-in hybrid MPV series called Gaoshan under the high-end Wey brand. The Gaoshan was initially a single model. Now, it has turned into an independent series that comprises three cars: Gaoshan 7, Gaoshan 8, and Gaoshan 9. The Gaoshan 8 and Gaoshan 9 entered the market to compete with Voyah Dream and Denza D9.

As mentioned, the Wey Gaoshan was initially a single model launched in October 2023. This model didn’t turn into a market success with a cumulative sales volume of 8,378 units from November 2023 to April 2025. Worth mentioning that this car also sells overseas as Wey 80. This year, GWM decided to turn this model into a series, launching the Gaoshan 8 and the Gaoshan 9 minivans. Aside from similar looks, these cars have some notable differences.

Differences between Gaoshan 8 and Gaoshan 9

At first sight, it is hard to distinguish the Gaoshan 8 from the Gaoshan 9. These models both have a generic modern MPV look with a large chrome plated grille and flat roofline. Both Gaoshan 8 and 9 resemble the Japanese Toyota Alphard. The two models boast a LiDAR sensor on the roof, 18-inch wheels, and rear sliding doors. The biggest difference between them is the dimensions.

The Gaoshan 8 measures 5280/1960/1900 mm with a wheelbase of 3145 mm. The car’s interior offers the 2+2+3 layout. There is a 17.3-inch monitor for the second-row passengers. The Gaoshan 8’s trunk has a standard volume of 435 liters. The Gaoshan 9 is a flagship model with dimensions of 5410/1900/1890 mm with a wheelbase of 3275 mm. It boasts a seat layout of 2+2+2 and a 315-liter trunk.

The center console of both minivans is similar. It has a single block of two 15.6-inch screens powered by the Snapdragon 8295 chip and Coffee OS3. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster sits behind the two-spoke steering wheel. The gear shifter is mounted in the steering column. There is also a 26-inch head-up display. The center console of these minivans has a wireless phone charging pad and a 12.5-liter fridge.

The Gaoshan 8 and the Gaoshan 9 share the same plug-in hybrid powertrain. It has a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine for 125 kW (170 hp) paired with two electric motors for 80 kW (107 hp) and 170 kW (228 hp). The combined power output of the system reaches 337 kW (452 hp). It has a standard 4WD system. The Gaoshan 8 has a 44.28 kWh ternary NMC pack for 172 km of electric WLTC range. The Gaoshan 9 has a bigger pack for 51.55 kWh for 201 km of WLTC range.

Wey Gaoshan 8 & Gaoshan 9 prices

The Gaoshan 8 is available for purchase with a price tag of 309,800 yuan (43,000 USD). The bigger Gaoshan 9 costs 353,900 yuan (49,100 USD). The main rivals of this model include Denza D9, Voyah Dream, and Xpeng X9. Later, the cheaper Gaoshan 7 will enter the market.
