BYD Song L officially started sales today in China for 189,800 – 249,800 yuan (26,700 – 35,200 USD). The price is about 30,000 yuan (4,200 USD) lower than the presale price.
The presales opened on October 31, and since then, Song L received 28,350 orders, BYD announced during the launch ceremony.
Song L is the best-looking BYD car so far. The SUV fastback sits on an all-electric e-platform 3.0 and packs many BYD technologies, including the Disus-C suspension system, CTB (cell-to-body) battery integration technology, and an active rear wing. It also has frameless doors, hidden door handles, and 20″ wheels.
It is the latest model in the Dynasty series and is closely related to Denza N7, which shares the same platform. It measures (L/W/H) 4840/1950/1560 mm, with a wheelbase of 2930 mm. That is 90mm longer and 64 mm shorter (height) than the Tesla Model Y.
Inside, the BYD Song L has a 15.6″ floating rotatable screen and a 10.25″ LCD instrument panel behind the steering wheel. There is also a 50″ head-up display (AR-HUD), and the new generation DiLink system.
Song L comes in five versions, which are consistent with pre-sales versions; only the price was lowered:

The EV has three powertrain options: 150 kW with 310 Nm torque, 230 kW with 360 Nm torque (both RWD), and AWD 380 kW with 670 Nm peak torque. Battery options are two, 71.8 kWh and 87.04 kWh, both in-house developed LFP Blade batteries. The top trim level of Song L with 380 kW (510 hp) dual motors can accelerate 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.
Editor’s comment
Song L is BYD’s answer to the Model Y SUV, Zeekr 001 fastback, and IM LS6, and the launch price is pretty surprising, hinting the price war is far from over and will further escalate in 2024 when we can expect some smaller players to lose their wheels. BYD wants to take the market share at all costs, and Song L might be the EV company was waiting for: it is a good looker packed with lots of BYD tech, and the price is so rock bottom it will make customers who think about Tesla or Zeekr think twice. We will keep an eye on delivery numbers.
