The new Avatr 15 which should come in both all-electric and range extended (EREV) versions is a mid-size SUV which should be cheaper than the Avatr 11, currently the brand’s only SUV on sale. It’s name should be pronounced as one-five.

Autohome report that the Avatr 15 is being benchmarked against the Tesla Model Y meaning that the car will add to a growing number of Chinese models targeting the American car’s territory including the XPeng G6, BYD Song L and forthcoming BYD Sea Lion.

Currently the car is heavily camouflaged but the overall shape shows the car is a dynamic crossover. Significantly the rear doesn’t have the sharp rake which is characteristic of both the Avatr 11 and 12. The rear window is relatively large, as is the tailgate. There seems to be a wave along the waistband and a panoramic roof. We can see that the car has hidden door handles and the taillights are likely to have a through-type design.

The Avatr 15 will probably launch in the third quarter of 2024. Also breaking cover this year should be a new car codenamed E16 and so this will likely become the Avatr 16. All Avatr models will this year receive extended ranger (EREV) versions in an effort to lower the price threshold and increase sales.

Avatr started out as a joint venture between Changan and Nio. After Nio withdrew due to financial problems battery producer CATL joined the brand. Currently Changan holds 41% ownership, CATL 14%, Chongqing Chengan Foundation 11% and the remainder spread over various investment groups. Huawei is not a shareholder but provides much of the tech including the HarmonyOS operating system for the cockpit and Huawei ADS 2.0 for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). Huawei’s self-driving system is one of the most advanced in China.

Avatr’s first car the Avatr 11, an SUV,  went on sale in 2022. The second model the Avatr 12 sedan began deliveries in December last year. Avatr targeted sales of 100,000 in 2023 but fell far short at around 30,000. The target for 2024 was initially reduced to 90,000 but this has since been increased to 100,000. It is possible that the Avatr brand will be taken overseas, the Avatr 12 was actually unveiled at IAA Mobility Munich rather than in China.
