The Stellantis-backed Chinese automaker Leapmotor teased the new Lafa 5 electric SUV ahead of its debut at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. The Lafa 5 is the brand’s first model that is distinct from the previously used rule of naming with two characters. It is a compact hatchback with an internal number B05, designed for urban mobility.
Leapmotor is a steadily developing Chinese startup that was partly acquired by Stellantis last year. In August 2025, this automaker’s sales reached an all-time high of 57,066 units delivered worldwide. It is an 88% increase compared to August 2024. From January to August 2025, Leapmotor managed to sell 328,859 cars. In August this year, Leapmotor shared that it achieved the semi-annual net profit for the first time.
The Leapmotor’s current model line comprises seven models domestically. However, it sells three vehicles globally. Soon, Leapmotor will introduce the all-new car at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. It is the Lafa 5 BEV hatchback designed for urban mobility.
More about the Leapmotor Lafa 5
The Lafa 5 is a compact hatchback previously known by its codename B05. It stands on the LEAP 3.5 modular architecture, similar to the B10 crossover. This vehicle follows the distinguishing design language of Leapmotor. It adopts curve LED headlights, retractable door handles, a sporty roof spoiler, and a single taillight unit.

The Leapmotor Lafa 5 adopts a LiDAR on the roof, which isn’t common for small and affordable BEVs. Other highlights of the Lafa 5 include blackened side-view mirrors, a rear-view camera, and sculpted fenders. There is no information about the dimensions of the Leapmotor Lafa 5. However, it seems that the new car stays close to the Volkswagen ID.3 in terms of size. The German SUV’s length, width, and height are 4,262 mm, 1,809 mm, and 1,552 mm, respectively.
It is worth noting that the Lafa 5 is the first Leapmotor-branded car that distances itself from the tradition of naming with two characters. This shift likely marks Leapmotor’s goal to accelerate overseas sales. The Lafa 5 will make its debut at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich on September 9.
