China EV Daily (Aug 15): BYD drops Baidu tech, Tesla establishes FSD team in China, BAIC & Huawei plan new electric sedan

[BYD] On August 15, according to the South China Morning Post, two insiders revealed that BYD has abandoned the agreement to equip its electric vehicles with Baidu’s autonomous driving technology, focusing instead on developing in-house smart car software. Reports indicate that BYD had originally agreed in March 2022 to use Baidu’s technology in its electric vehicles, including navigation and automated valet parking. This deal was once viewed as a significant collaboration for Baidu’s autonomous driving division, Apollo. — SCMP

[Tesla] On August 15, it was learned from the internet that Tesla plans to form a local operations team of about 20 people to promote the deployment of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) solution in the Chinese market. At the same time, Tesla is also trying to establish a data labeling team in China, with a size of about a hundred people. — YiChe

[BAIC] On August 15, reporters learned from insiders at BAIC Blue Valley that BAIC New Energy’s first new car, following their collaboration with Huawei on “smart selection,” is positioned as a C-class pure electric intelligent sedan and will officially debut next year. “The product is defined by Huawei, while BAIC New Energy is responsible for providing the chassis architecture and complete vehicle production. The new car will enter Huawei’s sales channels, and the brand name has not yet been determined.”

[Industry News] On August 15, Li Auto reported sales of 7,200 units for week 32, consistent with the prior week, and is known for its range-extended vehicles. Nio sold 3,300 units, a 23% drop, with their Nio ES6 model boosting sales. Changan’s Deepal delivered 2,900 units, a 6% decline. Tesla sold 14,000 units, showing growth from the previous week’s 12,800. — CNC
