BYD to launch the Xia minivan in Mexico on June 25 – the official name is BYD M9

BYD will launch the Xia plug-in hybrid minivan in Mexico on June 26 under the BYD M9 name. The new model aims at families with a 945 km mixed range and a zero-to-hundred acceleration time of 8.1 seconds. According to Chinese insiders, BYD exported 500 units of the M9 MPV.

The BYD Xia minivan officially entered the Chinese market on January 8, 2025. Priced at 249,800 yuan (34,750 USD), this model aimed to become one of the segment’s bestsellers. However, the BYD Xia sold 14,962 units from January to May. The more expensive BYD-made Denza D9 minivan sold 44,676 units in the same period, according to China EV DataTracker.

To boost the sales volume of their large mass-market MPV, BYD decided to launch it globally. Previously, it was disclosed that the BYD Xia will enter overseas markets as the BYD M9. CarNewsChina predicted that Mexico would become one of the first markets for this model. On June 15, our assumption turned into proven information.

BYD M9 release in Mexico

The BYD M9 model came into sight on the BYD Mexico official website. On June 15, BYD Auto Mexico shared on social media that the M9 minivan will be officially launched in Mexico on June 26. The company said that the upcoming event is “the most anticipated launch of the year”. The live broadcast of the launch ceremony will start at 11 AM local time.

It was shared on the BYD Mexico official website that the M9 minivan has a mixed range of 945 km. Its NEDC fuel consumption is 17.8 km per liter (5.9 liters per 100 km). The car has an acceleration time of 8.1 seconds. A battery of this PHEV could be charged from 30% to 80% in 18 minutes.

According to a BYD-focused blogger with a nickname 小迪快报 (Xiaodi Kuaibao), the largest Chinese automaker has already exported 500 units of the BYD M9 (Xia). It means the company is ready to enter international markets. After the Mexican launch, BYD could focus on Asian countries. People here are friendly towards the MPV segment.

More about the BYD M9 / Xia

The BYD M9 is a large minivan that adopts the Loong Face (Dragon Face) design language. The car’s front end has a massive grille, sizeable headlights, and a chrome-plated element between them. From the back, the BYD M9 adopts a single taillight unit and a roof spoiler. Dimensions of the BYD M9 are 5145/1970/1805 mm with a wheelbase of 3,045 mm.

The BYD M9 adopts seven seats with a 2+2+3 layout. The car’s center console boasts three screens. Its main touchscreen has a diameter of 15.6 inches. The instrument panel and the front passenger screen have a diameter of 12.3 inches. Other features of the M9 include a cooling and heated storage box, folding tables, and a ceiling-mounted monitor.

In China, the BYD M9 (Xia) minivan adopts a 5.0 DM system with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine for 115 kW (154 hp) and an electric motor for 200 kW (268 hp). It has two battery options, 20.4 kWh and 36.6 kWh, suitable for 100 – 180 km (CLTC conditions).

The BYD Xia costs 249,800 – 309,800 yuan (34,750 – 43,100 USD) in China. For comparison, BYD’s high-end minivan Denza D9 costs 339,800 – 469,800 yuan (47,260 – 65,350 USD) in the domestic market.
