From Smart #2 mini EV to 4.96 m #6 fastback sedan, new models debut April 22 ahead of Beijing Auto Show
Smart has released official design sketches of Concept #2 and confirmed the debut of the #6 EHD fastback sedan at its April 22 global brand event in Beijing, ahead of the Auto China 2026 exhibition.
Concept #2 is presented as a design study previewing the upcoming production Smart #2. It retains the two-seat layout associated with the original smart fortwo while shifting to a fully electric platform. The model emphasises compact proportions and a redesigned exterior with a two-tone white-and-gold finish.
The concept reflects Smart’s return to smaller vehicles. A recent CarNewsChina report noted that the Smart #2 had already been spotted undergoing road testing in China, indicating development progress toward production.
Fastback expansion with #6 EHD
Alongside Concept #2, Smart confirmed the #6 EHD as its first fastback sedan. The model will debut at the same April 22 event and is planned initially for the Chinese market.
The #6 EHD features a fastback silhouette with a low front profile and pronounced shoulder lines. Interior previews published earlier, including a CarNewsChina report from April 7, showed a cabin focused on digital interfaces and simplified design elements.
The model adopts a wheels-at-the-corners layout, a design approach that maximises interior space relative to its footprint.

Expanding product range
The two models highlight a broader shift in Smart’s lineup strategy, which now spans multiple segments. Since the brand’s restructuring under Mercedes-Benz and Geely in 2019, smart has expanded beyond the original two-seater format with models such as the #1 compact SUV, the #3 coupe SUV, and the larger #5 SUV.
Concept #2 signals a return to smaller, urban-focused vehicles, while Concept #6 EHD represents expansion into larger sedan segments. Both models were designed by the Mercedes-Benz global design team.

Data context: smart China sales
Smart recorded 1,717 vehicle sales in China in March 2026, representing a 97.1% month-on-month increase but a 33.2% year-on-year decline. Year-to-date monthly figures show volatility, with sales ranging from 871 units in February to 2,103 units in January. In 2025, monthly volumes generally ranged from 2,000 to 3,700 units, indicating a contraction trend entering 2026.
Industry positioning
Smart’s upcoming launches will be showcased at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, the world’s largest automotive exhibition, with 1,451 cars across 380,000 sqm of exhibition space. The brand currently operates in around 40 markets and continues to expand its EV lineup through its joint venture structure.
Concepts #2 and #6 EHD are positioned as key additions to this portfolio, targeting different segments within the electric vehicle market.
