BYD Seal DM-i will officially enter market on September 6th, the mid-size plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedan will be offered for 176,800 – 246,800 yuan (24,400 – 34,000 USD), the Shenzhen EV maker announced Friday.

The sedan was revealed under the name of Chaser 07 (Destroyer 07) at the Shanghai Auto Show. However, BYD decided to turn the Seal name into a line, launching Seal EV, Seal DM-i and Seal U (Atto3/Yuan Plus).

The sedan started pre-sales at Chengdu Auto Show. The PHEV is offered in six trims that offer 1.5T and 1.5L engine with 121 and 200 km in electric mode depending on the version. The first five trims offer 121 km range, while the last one offers the longest one. The consumption is rated at 3.9 L/100 km and it can speed up 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

The PHEV is built on 4980/1890/1495 mm chassis that sits on 2,900 mm wheelbase. It is 180 mm longer, 15 mm wider and 35 mm higher than the Seal EV. It also has a more traditional body shape. However, the PHEV still adopts typical BYD’s “Ocean Aesthetics” design with many elements from Ocean-X concept car allegorizing wind and waves.

The overall layout of the Seal DM-i’s interior design is also full of “Ocean Aesthetics” elements. The car is equipped with a full LCD dashboard, large size adaptive center control screen, and it also has head-up display (HUD). The difference is that the steering wheel adopts a new design, wrapped in leather material and equipped with chrome decoration.

The car is also equipped with wood grain trim, a large sunroof with sunshade, very thick rear seats, so the overall atmosphere is more luxurious and rich in texture. PHEV comes with Dynaudio speakers and 12 airbags, which is the most in the class.

So nicely put for us Mr.Petkovic….. allowing us to see the designers’ aim more clearly.
What’s noteworthy here, is that the three Seals are each so different in their exterior design. I hope BYD doesn’t fall into the naming sinkhole that Chery and others have.
