In the last week of July, the Chinese EV market was heavily up, with Stellantis-backed Leapmotor and Deepal being exceptions. Xiaomi insurance registrations were 160% up compared with the week before, Nio was about 20% up, Tesla 30% up, and BYD 5% up.
The week 30 (W30) was between July 22 – 28. The week 30 of the previous year used for comparison was between July 24 – 30, 2023.
The weekly sales are published by Li Auto, and despite Li’s not explicitly saying it, they are based on insurance registration data. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV) sales, the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China. The data only shows passenger vehicles (PVs).
Many automakers are not happy about it, as it shows independent data about how many cars received insurance registration that week in China, providing additional metrics to the self-reported monthly sales data that automakers publish themselves following the audit.
