The China EV market was mainly up in the third week of May, with several exceptions. Nio was up 5%, Xpeng was up 33%, and BYD was up 19%, while Tesla was down 11% compared with the week before.

Onvo registered 1,450 and Firefly 470 units, bringing the Nio Group’s registrations to 5,170, up 10% from the previous week. In the first three weeks of June, the Nio Group registered 14,200 cars.

Key events to watch:

  • BYD brand is at a 2025 all-time high, and BYD Group, with its brands Denza and FCB, surpassed 90k registrations
  • Xpeng grew 240% from the same week last year to 8,500 units
  • Xiaomi down 16.9% WoW – The Xiaomi YU7 SUV will launch later this week
  • Firefly grew 18% after three consecutive weeks of decline, but sales are still low, under 500 units.
  • Onvo grew 21%, but its sales couldn’t break the 1,500 units threshold for four consecutive weeks

The weekly sales were published by Li Auto. However, Li Auto ceased publishing them in March 2025 after the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) “recommended” that Li Auto, media and any third parties end it. CAAM says weekly data “undermines the industry order” and “fuels vicious competition.” Since then, Li Auto has published only its own weekly EV registration.

The weekly data are used by consultants, analysts, or investors to see the sales trend and forecast monthly deliveries. They show how many cars were registered for road traffic, which can be later compared with automakers’ self-reported monthly sales, which, unlike registrations, include cars for showrooms, test cars, and other uses.

Most of China’s media have followed CAAM’s recommendation to stop publishing weekly figures. CarNewsChina continues to publish weekly insurance registrations, based on China EV DataTracker data.

The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicle (NEV) sales, the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.

Nio launched Firefly with a BaaS rental plan today, effectively lowering the starting price by over 30% to 79,800 yuan (11,100 USD) in China. The monthly battery rental fee is 399 yuan (55 USD).

As Firefly has no compatible battery swap stations and the BaaS model was supposed to launch in late August, this move signals a lower-than-expected sales performance from Firefly EV, which Nio tries to address.

Avatr registered 2,600 vehicles, up 8.3% from 2,400 units the week before. In the first three weeks of June, Avatr registered 6,740 vehicles in China.
