In the second whole week of August, the Chinese EV market was mainly up. The Nio brand grew 20%, Onvo 18%, Xpeng remained flat, while Tesla grew about 5%, compared with the week before.

Nio Group registered 7,190 EVs, up about 18% from 6,100 the week before.

Key events to watch:

• Onvo had a record-breaking week in 2025 and the second-best in its history with 3,790 registrations
  • Onvo L90 registered record-breaking 2,330 units
• Tesla continues to grow for the fourth week straight
• Li Auto continues to struggle, once on the forefront of the leaderboard, now fell under 6k for three straight weeks
• BYD is up 19% from last week. However, keep the year-over-year decline for seven consecutive weeks, since week 26
• Leapmotor had the second-best week in its history with 10,400 registrations, nearly topping the 10,620 record from week 26.

The weekly brand’s EV sales were published by Li Auto. However, Li Auto ceased publishing them in March 2025 after the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) “recommended” that Li Auto, media and any third parties end it. CAAM says weekly data “undermines the industry order” and “fuels vicious competition.” Since then, Li Auto has published only its own weekly EV registration.

The weekly data are used by consultants, analysts, or investors to see the sales trend and forecast monthly deliveries. They show how many cars were registered for road traffic, which can be later compared with automakers’ self-reported monthly sales, which, unlike registrations, include cars for showrooms, test cars, and other uses.

Most of China’s media have followed CAAM’s recommendation to stop publishing weekly figures. CarNewsChina continues to publish weekly insurance registrations, based on China EV DataTracker data.

The numbers are rounded and present the brand’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in China, the government term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.

Week 33 of 2025 (W33) was between August 11 and August 17. 

BYD brand registered 65,200 vehicles, up 19.0% from 54,800 the week before, but down 16.94% from 78,500 in the same week last year. In the first two full weeks of August (4-17), BYD registered 120,000 vehicles in China.

Fang Cheng Bao registered 3,360 vehicles, up 12.0% from 3,000 the week before, and up 122.52% from 1,510 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Fang Cheng Bao registered 6,360 vehicles in China.

Denza registered 2,230 vehicles, up 31.2% from 1,700 the week before, and up 31.18% from 1,700 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Denza registered 3,930 vehicles in China.

Tesla registered 14,000 vehicles, up 4.5% from 13,400 the week before, but down 2.10% from 14,300 in the same week last year. In the first full two weeks of August (4-17), Tesla registered 27,400 vehicles in China.

Today, Tesla launched the Model Y L in China, the bigger version of Model Y with six seats. The new three-row SUV starts at 47,120 USD.

• Model Y SUV: 8,800 units
• Model 3 sedan: 5,200 units

Stellantis-backed Leapmotor registered 10,400 vehicles, up 11.8% from 9,300 the week before, and up 96.23% from 5,300 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Leapmotor registered 19,700 vehicles in China.

Volkswagen-backed Xpeng registered 7,900 vehicles, the same as the week before, but up 243.48% from 2,300 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Xpeng registered 15,800 vehicles in China.

Xpeng will launch the new and good-looking P7 sedan-coupe on August 27 in Guangzhou. It started pre-sales on August 6, getting 10,000 preorders in 6 minutes, the company said.

Huawei’s Aito registered 7,700 vehicles, up 10.0% from 7,000 the week before, and up 37.50% from 5,600 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Aito registered 14,700 vehicles in China.

Xiaomi registered 7,170 vehicles, up 5.4% from 6,800 the week before, and up 175.77% from 2,600 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Xiaomi registered 13,970 vehicles in China.

• SU7 sedan (incl. Ultra): 3,600 units
• YU7 SUV: 3,570 units

Li Auto registered 5,600 vehicles, up 5.7% from 5,300 the week before, but down 47.66% from 10,700 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Li Auto registered 10,900 vehicles in China.

GAC Aion registered 5,000 vehicles, up 6.4% from 4,700 the week before, but down 27.54% from 6,900 in the same week last year.

Deepal registered 4,000 vehicles, up 8.1% from 3,700 the week before, and up 29.03% from 3,100 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Deepal registered 7,700 vehicles in China.

Onvo registered 3,790 vehicles, up 18.4% from 3,200 the week before. In the first two weeks of August, Onvo registered 6,990 vehicles in China.

Model breakdown:

• Onvo L90: 2,330 units
• Onvo L60: 1,460 units

Nio registered 2,520 vehicles, up 20.0% from 2,100 the week before, but down 23.64% from 3,300 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Nio registered 4,620 vehicles in China.

Firefly registered 880 vehicles, up 25.7% from 700 the week before. In the first two weeks of August, Firefly registered 1,580 vehicles in China.

Zeekr registered 3,300 vehicles, the same as the week before, but down 5.71% from 3,500 in the same week last year. In the first two weeks of August, Zeekr registered 6,600 vehicles in China.
