The BYD Shark plug-in hybrid pickup truck will enter China “sooner or later”, according to BYD Group public relations general manager Li Yunfei. The domestic launch is in planning stages. GM hinted that the Shark will have a seemingly lower price tag in China, compared to overseas markets.
The BYD Shark pickup truck started international sales in May 2024 with Mexico as the launch country. By September 2025, the world’s largest EV maker exported over 30,000 units of this model. In some markets, this truck sells under the BYD Shark 6 name. In the future, this model will enter China.
BYD Shark to enter China
During the visit to Mexico, BYD GM Li Yunfei posted a photo of the BYD Shark pickup truck on his Weibo social media account. In the comment section, he wrote that this car is in the planning stages of the domestic launch. It will enter China sooner or later. Moreover, Li Yunfei highlighted that the BYD Shark is selling hot outside China. Li Yunfei also admitted that its overseas cost is higher than the possible domestic price.

New energy pickup truck sales are rapidly increasing in China, with around 49,000 units delivered from January to August 2025 (CPCA data). It is 536% higher than the same period of 2024. This market segment previously faced severe challenges due to urban usage restrictions. However, such rules have been eased, with many cities lifting bans on pickup trucks.

Right now, it is relatively safe for BYD to enter the local market with the Shark pickup truck, as this market niche isn’t as crowded as other segments. We can highlight two rivals for the upcoming BYD car: the Ridarra RD6 PHEV (domestic name is Radar King Kong EM-P) and the GWM Cannon Alpha (also known as Sahar Poer, Shanhai Poer).
