The Changan’s powertrain branch, Dongan, ignited a new ICE that meets Euro VII emission requirements. It is a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine developed for plug-in hybrid systems.

Harbin Dongan Auto Engine was founded in 1948 as a subsidiary of the state-owned Changan Automobile Group. It currently supplies engines to vehicles manufactured by such companies as Changan, BAW, and JAC. The Li Auto One EREV crossover also used the Dongan-made range extender.

Dongan officially shared that the M15NTH engine successfully ignited at 8:57 AM on December 25 in the testing laboratory of the Range Extender Powertrain System Research Institute. The engine smoothly started running after the start button was pressed.

The M15NTH engine meets China VII and Euro VII standards. This milestone was achieved by using the Miller cycle, variable oil pump, cooled EGR, and centrally located VVT. Other highlights include pre-catalytic converter intake, mirror valves, and built-in torsional vibration dampers. The M15NTH boasts direct fuel injection, enhanced compression ratio, and improved thermal efficiency.

Dongan officials shared that components suppliers and the cylinder block supervisor worked through the night to ensure finished product output. Moreover, the new engine became the conclusion to the company’s 14th Five-Year plan. The M15NTH will become the platform for the company’s next-gen hybrid vehicles.

We will remind you that Euro VII will come into force from July 1, 2027. It largely maintains Euro VI tailpipe emission limits but tightens Particle Number (PN) rules by counting smaller particles (down to 10nm from 23nm) and extends PM/PN tests to all petrol engines.

Previously, Dongan revealed its first R05E prototype of China’s first rotary engine developed for low-altitude vehicles. The engine has a rated speed of 6,500 rpm and an output power of 53 kW (72 hp).
